How Canelo vs. Scull went

ESPN called it a forgettable fight. Canelo came in holding the WBC, WBO and WBA belts and was fighting outside Mexico and the United States for the first time in his career. Scull, the IBF champion, was very mobile, and ESPN reported that Canelo could not land any significant punches on him.

The IBF title was the missing piece. ESPN reported that Canelo had unified all four belts with an 11th-round stoppage of Caleb Plant in November 2021, made four defenses, and was then stripped by the IBF when he chose to fight Edgar Berlanga instead of Scull, the mandatory challenger. Scull won the vacant IBF title against Vladimir Shishkin in October 2024, and Canelo was his first defense.
