Jasson Dominguez, Yankees Seek Sweep of Rangers Behind Rodon
Jasson Dominguez is wasting no time making his presence felt in the Bronx. After returning from Tommy John surgery, the Yankees’ top prospect is quickly becoming one of the key pieces in a surging New York lineup.
On Wednesday night, in freezing temperatures, Dominguez delivered what could be his defining moment of the 2024 season — at least so far. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Dominguez launched a solo homer off Rangers closer Luke Jackson to walk off the Texas Rangers and give New York a dramatic 4-3 win.
It was his fourth homer in his past nine games, during which he’s hitting .273 (9-for-33), raising his average to .241 overall.
“When pitchers make mistakes, he’s not missing,” said Yankees captain Aaron Judge. “His approach is getting sharper, he’s improving on defense — he’s becoming a complete player. If we want to go deep this year, he’s going to be a huge part of it.”
And so far, he’s looking every bit the part.

Yankees Chasing Sweep and Momentum
If weather permits — with a rainy forecast threatening Thursday’s finale — the Yankees will look to complete a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champion Rangers. New York has won 10 of its last 13 games and is rolling into a nine-game road trip with one of the league’s most dangerous lineups.
Wednesday’s comeback showcased the depth of that lineup. After Dominguez’s heroics, it was Cody Bellinger continuing his best stretch of the season. Bellinger, who went 2-for-4 with a homer off Jacob deGrom, extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games. He’s hitting .377 (23-for-61) during that streak, raising his average from a lowly .196 to .264.
Then there’s Judge. After tying the game with an RBI single in the eighth, Judge enters the series finale leading all of baseball with a .402 batting average. He’s putting together one of the best first halves in recent memory and anchoring the Yankees with MVP-level consistency.

Rodon Looks to Continue Dominance
Taking the mound Thursday for New York will be left-hander Carlos Rodon (5-3, 3.17 ERA), who’s on a stellar run of his own. Over his past six starts, Rodon is 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA, and he’s holding opposing hitters to minimal contact. In fact, he’s allowed four hits or fewer in nine of his ten starts this season — elite efficiency that has reestablished him as a frontline starter.
Rodon is coming off a solid outing against the Mets, where he went five innings, allowing just two hits and one run in a 6-2 win. Though his innings have been limited at times, he’s been dominant in short bursts and has provided the Yankees with a reliable arm amid rotation questions.
In his career against Texas, Rodon is 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA over seven starts — more than capable of shutting down a Rangers lineup that has struggled to string together big innings.

Rangers Lean on Eovaldi to Avoid Sweep
Trying to halt a sweep, the Rangers will turn to their ace — Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 1.61 ERA). The veteran righty has been nothing short of sensational over the past month. Over his last five starts, Eovaldi is 3-0 with a microscopic 0.59 ERA — the lowest five-start ERA span of his career.
He’s racked up 34 strikeouts, allowed just six walks, and hasn’t given up a single home run during this stretch. He enters Thursday with a 12 2/3-inning scoreless streak, having last pitched Friday in a no-decision against the Houston Astros.
Eovaldi has faced the Yankees plenty — 22 games (19 starts) with a 5-5 record and a 3.55 ERA. But this version of the Yankees lineup is firing on all cylinders, and Eovaldi will need to be sharp to keep it from getting out of hand early.

Rangers Struggle to Finish Despite Strong Start
Wednesday’s loss was particularly gut-wrenching for the Rangers, who saw Jacob deGrom deliver one of his best performances of the season: seven innings, two hits, and one run allowed. But the bullpen faltered late, and costly mistakes on both sides of the ball sealed their fate.
Jake Burger was a one-man show for Texas offensively, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, but the rest of the lineup struggled to capitalize on opportunities, striking out 11 times.
“You hate to waste a start like Jacob’s,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “That’s what makes this loss tough.”
Texas has now dropped back-to-back games and will be trying to avoid being swept for just the second time this season. Their inconsistent bullpen and offensive approach remain lingering concerns — especially as they face elite pitching like Rodon’s.
