Allan Winans Set for Yankees Debut in Opener vs. Reds
The New York Yankees open a three-game set Monday night at Cincinnati Reds with a bit of unfinished business on their minds.
Last July, the Reds swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium — a rare result that still lingers with the Bronx Bombers. Two years ago, it was the Yankees sweeping a three-game series in Cincinnati. This year, with both teams battling injuries but riding recent momentum, the series is set up for another memorable clash.

Yankees’ Rotation Woes Continue
After snapping a season-worst six-game skid with three wins in their last four, the Yankees now face another hurdle. Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough was added to the 15-day IL on Sunday with a right oblique strain, joining Gerrit Cole, Marcus Stroman, and Luis Gil on the injured list.
To help patch the rotation, right-hander Allan Winans will make his Yankees debut on Monday. Claimed off waivers from the Braves in January, Winans dominated at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA across 50 innings.
“He’s been tremendous,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “To be this deep into the season and have a sub-1.00 ERA, it’s been excellent. Hopefully, he brings some of that here with us.”
Winans has faced the Reds once — a rough outing last July when he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. He’ll look for better results this time.
Reds Riding Positive Momentum
The Reds, meanwhile, snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Despite the series loss, Cincinnati has won 10 of its last 15, with Matt McLain riding a 10-game hitting streak into Monday.
Sunday’s win came on the back of starter Andrew Abbott, who retired 18 straight batters in 100-degree heat.
“I think we’re starting to figure it out on all ends — defense, offense, and pitching,” Abbott said. “We’re just remaining steady. Keep playing hard, and those breaks will happen for us.”
Nick Lodolo (5-5, 3.71 ERA) gets the ball for Cincinnati. Last time out, he threw a rain-shortened complete game against Minnesota, and with nine quality starts this season, he’ll face the Yankees for the first time.
