Top Prospect Chase Burns to Make MLB Debut for Reds vs. Yankees
The future is now in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Reds are handing the ball to their top pitching prospect, Chase Burns, for his major league debut on Tuesday night. And for his first assignment, he’ll face one of the best lineups in baseball and the team he grew up cheering for: the New York Yankees.
A Debut Fueled by Need and Hope
The promotion of Burns, the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft, comes at a critical time for the Reds. The team’s rotation has been decimated by injuries, and the front office signaled a pivot to their youth by designating veteran Jeimer Candelario for assignment on Monday. Burns has been nothing short of dominant in the minors, posting a 7-3 record with a 1.77 ERA across three levels this season.
“(He has) pretty special stuff, and it’s exciting,” Reds manager David Bell said. “I think it sends a huge message that we’re trying to win… when everybody’s on the same page, pulling the same direction, it kind of buoys you up a little bit.”
A Dream Come True
For the 22-year-old right-hander, this debut is a surreal moment. He will take the mound against the very team he idolized as a child.
“It’s an historical team going against a great lineup,” Burns said. “One of my favorite teams growing up. I love Derek Jeter. So, to be able to go against them, it’s awesome.” This kind of narrative is a fascinating element, a topic often explored in our expert betting guide.
The Rodon Roadblock
Burns’ trial by fire will be a true test, as he faces the Yankees’ ace, Carlos Rodon (9-5, 3.10 ERA). The veteran lefty has been on a tear, going 8-2 with a 2.35 ERA over his last 12 starts. He is coming off another win where he allowed three solo home runs but was otherwise in command. This premier duel between a hyped rookie and a veteran ace will be the main event on the scores and odds board.
Yankees Need a Clutch Hit
The Yankees will look to spoil the debut after a frustrating 6-1 loss in the series opener. Their offense had plenty of chances but went a stunning 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving a small army on the basepaths. “We didn’t put the ball in play with runners out there when we had opportunities,” a frustrated manager Aaron Boone said.
