Terrence Crawford Recent Fights
Terrence Crawford has fought just twice in the last two years. He defeated Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision in August 2024. That was the last time he stepped into the ring. Furthermore, that was his first bout at 154 pounds. Prior to this, he was at the 147-pound weight class.
It should also be noted that he won the junior middleweight WBA title in the fight against Madrimov. However, he will be forfeiting that belt once he steps into the ring with Alvarez.
Prior to that bout, he fought Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023. “Bud” scored the 9th round TKO in one of the signature moments of his career.
He was more active in the ring before the Spence fight having taken out David Avanesyan via 6th round KO, Shawn Porter via 10th round TKO, Kell Brook via 4th round TKO, and Egidijus Kavaliauskas via 9th round TKO. All of those bouts came within a three-year period.
With that said, Crawford is going up to 168 pounds to face Canelo. That’s a lot of size and bulk that he had to pack on in order to compete in this mega fight.
Terrence Crawford Odds
Crawford opened as a +184 underdog for this bout. However, those odds have come down to a range of +128 to +155. Prior to this bout, Crawford was a -1200 favorite over Madrimov and -670 over Spence. This is the first time that Crawford is listed as an underdog according to the betting data.
Canelo Alvarez Recent Fights
Canelo Alvarez fights twice a year like clockwork. He typically competes in May and September of each year. Often around Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.
He last competed in May, where he picked up a decision win over William Scull. This felt more like an uninspired outing for Alvarez who has been steamrolling the competition since his May 2022 loss to Dimitrii Bivol in the 175-pound division.
Since that defeat, he beat Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy bout via unanimous decision. Alvarez was highly motivated following his loss to Bivol. And, unlike the previous two bouts, he was clearly the better fighter in this matchup. But GGG did have to come up in weight.
The next win came against John Ryder in May 2023, where he won via decision 120-107, 118-109, 118-109. It was another easy victory, which continued in September that year with a decision win over Jermell Charlo 118-109, 118-109, 119-108.
Then, Alvarez took on Jamie Munguia in May 2024, and won 117-110, 116-111, 115-112. He followed that up with a decision win over Edgar Berlanga in September of last year with the scores of 118-109, 118-109, 117-110.
When Alvarez is motivated, he’s a different fighter. Since the Bivol fight, we’ve seen a few inspired performances. But we’ve also seen some bouts where it felt like he was just going through the motions as he knows that his opponent isn’t a real threat.
I expect an inspired outing this weekend against a fantastic boxer in Crawford. I also expect Crawford to willingly engage in a fight instead of avoiding it like Scull or running from it like Charlo did.
Canelo Alvarez Odds
Canelo opened as a -230 favorite and has settled in at a range of -160 to -192. This is a far cry from his massive odds of -4500 against Cull and -2000 against Edgar Berlanga. This is the lowest his odds have been since his 2024 bout against Kaime Munguia.
Alvarez has not been an underdog since his first fight against Gennady Golovkin in 2018, where he was +175 to +180.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford Predictions
If this bout was at the 154-pound weight class, then I think Crawford would have a much better chance at winning. This bout will be a tactical fight and not necessarily a war of punches or prolonged exchanges.
Both fighters have evolved into smart boxers who pick and choose their moments along with throwing calculated punches. It will be a chess match of sorts where the mental game will be just as prevalent as the physical competition.
Crawford will use his footwork and speed to try and avoid Canelo’s size advantage and power. I fully expect Alvarez to work on Crawford’s body and try to slow down Bud. That makes him easier to pummel.
How much damage can Crawford’s counterpunching do to Alvarez? This is one of the biggest aspects of the fight that I will be watching for.
With that said, as much as I have been a fan of Crawford over the years, it’s hard to imagine that he will outwork Alvarez at his preferred weight class. While I see Bud staying engaged and fighting until the end, I believe that Canelo is going to plow forward and use that size advantage to win this fight.
Bet: Canelo Alvarez (-175)
The Best Alvarez vs. Crawford Prop Bets
Let’s take a look at some of the popular Alvarez vs. Crawford prop bets:
Over/Under 10.5 rounds
- Over 10.5 (-400)
- Under 10.5 (+300)
For Alvarez, 11 of his last 13 fights have gone over 10.5 rounds. For Crawford, only one of his last seven fights have gone this far. Typically, Crawford is putting away his opponents earlier in the fight. With that said, I see this bout going Over 10.5 rounds and the full distance.
Bet: Over 10.5 rounds (-400)
Will Fight go the distance?
- Yes (-350)
- No (+250)
Crawford’s first fight at 154 pounds went the full 12 rounds. Alvarez’s last seven bouts went the distance. I don’t see either fighter getting stopped in this fight. For one, Crawford has never lost before. And for two, Alvarez has never been stopped.
Bet: Yes (-350)
Method of Victory
- Alvarez via TKO/KO/DQ (+375)
- Alvarez via decision (+125)
- Crawford via TKO/KO/DQ (+850)
- Crawford via decision (+200)
- Draw (+1400)
Let’s be honest here, this fight is going the distance. So, it then comes down to who will win on points. And, I wouldn’t put it past the sport of boxing to make this a Draw so that we get another bout.
I am leaning towards Alvarez winning this fight and doing so by his norm – unanimous decision.
Bet: Alvarez via decision (+125)
Betting on Rounds
- Either Winner in rounds 1-4 (+1800)
- Either Winner in rounds 5-8 (+700)
- Either Winner in rounds 9-12 (+600)
- Fight To Go The Distance (-350)
As I’ve laid out in the previous prop bets, take this bout to go the full 12 rounds. However, if you want to take a flier on something else, then pick Either Winner in rounds 9-12. A worn out Crawford could be stopped late if Canelo’s size advantage proves to much.
Bet: Fight To Go The Distance (-350)
What’s Next For The Alvarez vs. Crawford Winner?
I think this really comes down to how the fight unfolds. If it’s a close one where the winner picks up a split decision victory or majority victory, then we will get a rematch. If Crawford wins, then we will get a rematch.
If Canelo wins, then I think he moves on to an easier fight next May, before challenging another named opponent one year from now.
Osleys Iglesias is a name to watch out for as he should be named the IBF mandatory challenger, which then the winner of this fight would either face him or forfeit the title.
Last year, Alvarez forfeited the title instead of fighting Scull. This year, he decided to fight Scull and won the belt back. We could see something similar to this with Iglesias or another mandatory challenger for one of the other super middleweight belts.
