Big 12 Football Odds continue to revolve around defending champion Texas Tech, but the betting market creates a much more interesting question than simply identifying the best team. The Red Raiders are now priced around even money and can be found as short as approximately -120 at some sportsbooks, leaving very little room for error across a nine-game conference schedule.

BYU is the clear second choice around +550 to +600, followed by Utah near +650 to +900. Kansas State, Houston, Arizona, TCU and Arizona State form a deep second tier where the payout increases dramatically without requiring bettors to back teams that need complete program turnarounds.

Our updated 2026 Big 12 Championship prediction is BYU at +600 or better. Texas Tech remains the most likely champion, but its near-even-money price is difficult to justify when the Cougars return quarterback Bear Bachmeier, reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin and much of the roster that went 12-2 last season.

Houston remains our favorite longer-priced value at +1800 or better, while Utah becomes attractive near +900 and Arizona offers one of the strongest true longshot profiles at +2200. Texas Tech is still the team everyone has to beat, but the current price makes the Red Raiders easier to respect than to bet.

Big 12 Football Odds Update

The Red Raiders remain approximately +100 at several books and are now actually listed at negative money with some operators. That means bettors may have to risk more than $100 simply to win $100 on a preseason conference future.

BYU remains around +550 to +600 and therefore offers roughly six times the potential profit despite finishing only one major step behind Texas Tech last season. Utah follows around +650 to +900 depending on the sportsbook.

Kansas State and Houston occupy the next value tier. Kansas State can reach +1600, while Houston is available around +1600 to +1800. Arizona reaches approximately +2200 despite receiving significant preseason support, and TCU can be found as high as +2500.

The spread between sportsbooks is important. Arizona State, Kansas, West Virginia and UCF can differ by thousands of points depending on the operator, making price comparison essential before placing any Big 12 future.

Big 12 futures can vary considerably between operators, especially beyond the top three teams. Bettors can compare available books through the ScoresAndStats sportsbook reviews before locking in a conference championship position.

Current Big 12 Championship Odds 2026

Texas Tech occupies a completely different pricing tier from the rest of the conference.

The Red Raiders are approximately even money at the best widely available sportsbooks and can be shorter than -110 elsewhere. BYU is the clear No. 2 option around +550 to +600, followed by Utah.

After those three, the market becomes considerably more balanced. Kansas State, Houston, Arizona, TCU and Arizona State are all capable of returning between approximately 14-1 and 27-1 depending on the sportsbook.

That part of the board is where the most interesting betting decisions appear. Texas Tech may be considerably more likely to win than Houston, but the Red Raiders also have to win the conference almost half the time for an even-money ticket to justify its price.

Big 12 Futures Market Movement

The most important market development is Texas Tech becoming even more expensive without eliminating its biggest preseason uncertainty.

The Red Raiders were approximately +100 when the previous article was published. That price still exists at some sportsbooks, but other operators have moved Texas Tech into negative money.

BYU remains relatively stable near +550 to +600, making the Cougars more interesting on a relative-value basis. Utah has also developed a wider range, reaching +900 at the most favorable book.

Houston has improved slightly from the previous +1600 range and now reaches +1800. Kansas State is available around +1600, while Arizona has moved from roughly +1800 toward +2200 despite remaining highly respected in preseason projections.

Those movements are not enormous in isolation, but they matter when a futures ticket will remain open for more than three months.

2026 Big 12 Preseason Outlook

The Big 12 no longer releases its traditional official preseason standings poll, but a group of conference beat writers produced a 16-team preseason vote that provides useful context for the futures market.

Texas Tech finished first with 14 of 16 first-place votes. BYU received the other two and finished second.

The most interesting result came immediately behind them. Arizona and Houston tied for third, followed by Utah, TCU, Arizona State and Kansas State.

That order creates several sportsbook discrepancies. Houston is tied for third in the media projection but can be found around +1800. Arizona is also tied for third yet offers approximately +2200.

The national preseason rankings tell a similar story at the top. Texas Tech opens No. 12 in the AP poll, BYU No. 14, Utah No. 21 and Houston No. 23. Arizona, TCU and Oklahoma State also received votes.

Individual preseason honors strengthen the cases for both Texas Tech and BYU. LJ Martin was selected as the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Texas Tech defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr. earned preseason Defensive Player of the Year recognition.

Texas Tech Big 12 Championship Prediction

Texas Tech remains the team most likely to win the Big 12.

Team Texas Tech Red Raiders 1758557118

The Red Raiders went 11-1 during the 2025 regular season, beat BYU twice and dominated the Cougars 34-7 in the championship game. They also return one of the deepest defensive groups in the conference.

Texas Tech placed seven players on the preseason All-Big 12 team, more than any other program. Five came from the defensive side, including preseason Defensive Player of the Year A.J. Holmes Jr.

The largest offseason question remains quarterback, although the situation is clearer than it was earlier in the summer.

Will Hammond is leading the offense after returning from the ACL injury that ended his 2025 season. He completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions last year while adding 299 rushing yards and five scores.

That dual-threat production gives Texas Tech a legitimate answer at quarterback. It still requires bettors to accept uncertainty because Hammond has never started a complete college season and is returning from a major knee injury.

The schedule is favorable enough to maintain favorite status. Texas Tech hosts Houston, Arizona State, Arizona, West Virginia and TCU in conference play. Its Big 12 road games are Colorado, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State and Baylor.

That means the Red Raiders avoid BYU, Utah and Kansas State entirely during the regular season.

The football case is excellent. The betting case is less convincing.

A preseason price of -110 or -120 requires Texas Tech to win the conference more than half the time merely to generate positive value. Even +100 is demanding in a 16-team league with a championship game.

Texas Tech Prediction: Most likely champion, but pass at negative money. Consider only at +110 or better.

BYU Big 12 Championship Prediction

BYU is our final championship prediction at +600 or better.

Team Byu Cougars 1758557102

The Cougars finished 12-2 last season, reached the Big 12 Championship Game and return an unusual amount of production for a team that won 12 games.

Bear Bachmeier is back after one of the most impressive true freshman quarterback seasons in college football. He threw for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 527 rushing yards and 11 more scores.

That experience matters because quarterback stability separates BYU from several other Big 12 contenders.

The Cougars also return LJ Martin, the reigning and preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Martin gives BYU an established rushing identity that reduces the pressure on Bachmeier to carry the offense every week.

BYU had six players selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team, second only to Texas Tech. The offensive line also returns important experience, including center Bruce Mitchell.

The conference schedule is reasonable. BYU hosts Arizona, Iowa State, Arizona State, Baylor and Cincinnati while traveling to TCU, UCF, Utah and Kansas.

The major nonconference challenge is Notre Dame on October 17. That game matters for the CFP résumé but does not directly hurt BYU’s conference winning percentage if the Cougars lose.

The most valuable scheduling detail is that BYU does not play Texas Tech during the regular season. The Cougars can therefore reach Arlington without having to beat the favorite first.

At +600, the price provides enough compensation for the possibility that BYU reaches the title game and has to solve Texas Tech only once.

Our 2026 Big 12 Championship Pick: BYU at +600 or better.

Utah Big 12 Championship Prediction

Utah becomes significantly more appealing when the market reaches +850 or +900.

Team Utah Utes 1763145831

That transition should preserve Utah’s physical identity rather than forcing a complete philosophical rebuild.

Quarterback Devon Dampier is also healthy again after playing through a sports hernia and ankle issues last season. A healthier Dampier gives the offense much more dual-threat upside than his 2025 numbers fully showed.

Utah also returns running back Wayshawn Parker and several defensive veterans, creating enough continuity to remain a legitimate top-three conference contender.

The price is the key. Utah at +650 is reasonable but not especially attractive. At +850 or +900, the Utes begin to offer a stronger combination of defensive floor, quarterback upside and payout.

Best Defensive Big 12 Value: Utah at +850 or better.

Houston Big 12 Championship Value Pick

Houston remains our favorite longer-priced Big 12 value at +1800 or better.

Houston Cougars Logo

The Cougars improved from consecutive 4-8 seasons to 10-3 last year under Willie Fritz and finished the season nationally ranked.

Conner Weigman returns after producing one of the strongest seasons by a Big 12 quarterback. He enters Year 2 in the same offensive system rather than learning another new scheme.

Houston also returns receiver Amare Thomas and defensive back Will James while adding additional experience to the offensive line.

The preseason writers tied Houston for third in the conference, while the AP ranked the Cougars No. 23 nationally. That level of external respect does not match an 18-1 championship price.

The schedule is why Houston remains a value bet rather than our final prediction.

The Cougars open Big 12 play at Texas Tech on September 18 and later travel to Kansas State, Utah, Colorado and West Virginia. They host UCF, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati and Baylor.

That road slate creates real risk. It also gives Houston direct opportunities to beat the teams priced ahead of it.

If Houston wins in Lubbock, the current +1800 ticket could shorten dramatically before October begins.

Best Overall Big 12 Value: Houston at +1800 or better.

Kansas State Big 12 Championship Prediction

Kansas State is our preferred midrange sleeper at +1600 or better.

kansas-state-wildcats-logo

The Wildcats disappointed relative to expectations last season, but that creates a more attractive betting setup entering 2026.

Avery Johnson returns with another full season of starting experience after throwing for 2,385 yards, 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2025.

Johnson’s mobility remains a major advantage in close conference games, while Kansas State’s program structure under Chris Klieman provides a much higher floor than many teams carrying similar futures prices.

The Wildcats also avoid Texas Tech during the regular season.

Houston visits Manhattan on October 10, while Arizona also comes to Kansas State late in the season. Those home games give the Wildcats valuable direct control over several teams competing in the same second tier.

At +1400, Kansas State is playable. At +1600, the payout becomes more attractive than several teams sitting above the Wildcats in the preseason market.

Best Midrange Big 12 Sleeper: Kansas State at +1600 or better.

Arizona Big 12 Championship Longshot

Arizona is our favorite true longshot at +2200 or better.

Team Arizona Wildcats 1758557086

The Wildcats tied Houston for third in the preseason writers poll, yet their futures price is longer than Houston, Kansas State and Utah.

Quarterback Noah Fifita provides the strongest reason to trust the upside. He enters another season as one of the Big 12’s most established passers and was the preseason All-Big 12 selection at quarterback.

The schedule is challenging but creates several direct opportunities.

Arizona opens conference play at BYU on September 12 and later travels to Texas Tech and Kansas State. Utah and TCU both visit Tucson.

That gives Arizona a path to build a championship résumé without relying heavily on tiebreaker help. The Wildcats will play most of the teams standing between them and Arlington.

The +2200 price also gives bettors enough compensation for the difficult road schedule.

Best Big 12 Longshot: Arizona at +2200 or better.

2026 Big 12 Football Contender Tiers

The Big 12 is unusual because the favorite is separated dramatically from a large group of credible challengers.

Texas Tech belongs in its own probability tier. BYU and Utah form the primary challenger level because each combines high-end roster quality with a realistic path to a top-two conference record.

Houston, Kansas State and Arizona form our value tier. TCU and Arizona State remain live longshots, while Oklahoma State is one of the most difficult teams to evaluate because of its roster changes and new direction.

The remaining teams require either major preseason improvement or a substantially longer price before becoming priority futures positions.

Best Big 12 Football Win Total Bets

Win totals provide a useful alternative to betting Texas Tech at an extremely short conference price.

Texas Tech’s total sits around 10.5. Reaching 11 regular-season wins is certainly possible, but the number leaves almost no margin for quarterback transition, injury or an unexpected conference upset.

BYU and Houston both sit around 8.5. Of those two, Houston over 8.5 is our preferred position because the Cougars can cash with nine victories without needing to reach the Big 12 Championship Game.

Houston won 10 games last season and returns Weigman along with several key offensive and defensive pieces. The road schedule is difficult, but a 9-3 season remains a realistic target.

BYU over 8.5 is also attractive, but Notre Dame creates an additional nonconference loss opportunity and the road trip to Utah adds another difficult rivalry spot.

Utah over 8.5 becomes more interesting if the price is plus money. Dampier’s improved health gives the offense more upside, but a first-year head coach makes an expensive over less attractive.

Colorado under 4.5 remains the cleanest lower-tier fade if that number is still available. The Buffaloes face another difficult conference slate while operating from a much lower preseason baseline than the championship contenders.

Key Games That Could Decide the Big 12 Championship Race

The conference race begins unusually early in 2026.

Arizona travels to BYU on September 12 in one of the first Big 12 games of the season. That matchup immediately puts our championship prediction against our preferred longshot.

Houston then visits Texas Tech on September 18. The result could create one of the largest early-season futures swings in college football because the current market prices Texas Tech close to even money and Houston around 18-1.

Kansas State hosts Houston on October 10, creating another important second-tier tiebreaker.

The final month contains several major games. BYU visits Utah on November 7, Arizona hosts Utah on November 14 and then travels to Kansas State on November 21.

Texas Tech closes its schedule with Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU, while BYU finishes with Baylor, Kansas and Cincinnati.

The absence of divisions makes every conference loss important because the two highest conference winning percentages advance to Arlington.

When Is the 2026 Big 12 Championship Game?

The 2026 Big 12 Football Championship will be played Friday, December 4, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on ABC.

The Friday date is a change from recent Big 12 championship schedules and begins a new Friday-Saturday rotation designed to create additional national television exposure.

The Big 12 does not use divisions. The two teams with the best conference records qualify for the championship game, with league tiebreakers determining the participants if multiple programs finish tied.

That format is especially important in a 16-team conference because the schedule is not round-robin. Texas Tech, for example, does not face BYU, Utah or Kansas State during the regular season.

Texas Tech enters as the defending champion after beating BYU 34-7 in the 2025 title game.

Which Big 12 Teams Can Make the College Football Playoff?

The Big 12 champion receives an automatic place in the 2026-27 College Football Playoff.

The 12-team field includes the champions of the Big 12, ACC, Big Ten and SEC, the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams.

That makes winning the conference extremely valuable, but it also leaves room for a second Big 12 team to qualify as an at-large selection.

Texas Tech has the conference’s strongest at-large profile entering the season. The Red Raiders open No. 12 in the AP poll and could potentially reach the CFP even without winning another Big 12 Championship if their regular-season résumé is strong enough.

BYU also has a credible at-large path because Notre Dame gives the Cougars a nationally significant nonconference game. A 10-2 or 11-1 BYU team would have a strong argument even if it lost in Arlington.

Utah and Houston begin inside the preseason AP Top 25 as well, giving them an opportunity to build an at-large résumé rather than relying exclusively on the automatic bid.

Arizona and Kansas State have a more direct championship-or-bust playoff profile. Either could climb into the national conversation, but winning the Big 12 remains the cleaner route.

The four highest-ranked teams in the final CFP ranking receive first-round byes, so simply winning the Big 12 does not automatically guarantee a bye.

College football futures, playoff structures and implied probability are covered in more detail through the ScoresAndStats college football betting guide.

Previous Big 12 Football Picks Update

The previous ScoresAndStats update identified Texas Tech as the most likely champion, Houston as the preferred futures value and Arizona State as the top longshot.

Texas Tech remains the most likely champion, but the price has not improved enough to move the Red Raiders onto our primary betting card.

Houston remains one of the strongest value positions and can now be found as high as +1800. The Cougars also enter the season ranked in the AP Top 25 and tied for third in the preseason writers poll, strengthening the original value argument.

BYU receives the largest upgrade. The Cougars remain around +600 while returning Bachmeier, Martin and significant offensive-line experience. That combination moves BYU from top challenger to our final championship prediction.

Arizona replaces Arizona State as our preferred longshot because the Wildcats can be found around +2200 while tying Houston for third in the preseason writers poll and returning one of the conference’s most established quarterbacks.

Utah also receives a value upgrade if bettors can obtain +850 or +900 rather than the shorter +650 number.

Recent Big 12 Football Champions

Texas Tech won its first Big 12 football championship last season by dominating BYU 34-7 in Arlington.

The recent championship list demonstrates how open this conference has become. Five different programs have won the last five completed Big 12 title games.

Arizona State won in 2024, Texas in 2023, Kansas State in 2022 and Baylor in 2021.

That history is another reason to be cautious about laying negative money on any preseason favorite. Even the strongest roster still has to survive nine conference games and then defeat another top-two team in Arlington.

Final Big 12 Football Odds and Predictions

Texas Tech remains the best team on paper and the most likely 2026 Big 12 champion.

The problem is the price. Asking bettors to lay -110 or accept even money before a 12-game regular season creates too little upside, particularly with Hammond returning from a major knee injury and entering his first season as the full-time starter.

BYU is our preferred championship wager at +600. Bachmeier and Martin give the Cougars elite continuity at the two most important offensive positions, and BYU avoids Texas Tech during the regular season.

Houston is the best overall value farther down the board. The Cougars return an experienced quarterback from a 10-win team and can be found around +1800 despite entering the preseason AP Top 25.

Utah provides the defensive alternative at +850 or better. Kansas State is the midrange sleeper, while Arizona is the most attractive true longshot at +2200.

Our projected Big 12 Championship matchup is Texas Tech against BYU, recreating last year’s final. This time, the Cougars offer enough returning production and enough betting value for us to take the upset.
