The 36 rolls behind every craps bet

Two six-sided dice produce 36 combinations, and each one is equally likely. The table below counts how many of them make each total.

Two dice: 36 equally likely combinations.

A 7 is the most common total: 6 ways in 36, a 16.67% chance on any roll. The 2 and the 12 are the rarest, with 1 way each, or 2.78%. Every figure on this page comes from counting these 36 combinations against the payout each bet pays, with no sampling and no simulation.

The method is short. For each bet we count the rolls that win, lose or push. We weight each outcome by what it pays. The house edge is the expected loss as a share of the money bet.

The pass line and the odds bet

A pass line bet wins on a 7 or 11 on the come-out roll, a 22.22% chance, and loses on 2, 3 or 12, an 11.11% chance. The other 66.67% of come-out rolls set a point, and the bet then wins if the point repeats before a 7. Count every path and the pass line wins 244 times in 495, or 49.29%. The house edge is 7/495, which is 1.41%. A come bet follows the same rules started on a later roll, so it carries the same figures.

Don’t pass reverses the bet, with one change: a 12 on the come-out is a push, which happens 2.78% of the time. It wins 47.93% and loses 49.29%, for a house edge of 3/220, or 1.36%.

A house edge is the expected result of playing, and it is a loss: on the pass line, 1.41% of the money bet over time. No betting pattern changes it. The edge belongs to each bet, and a sum of bets that each lose on average also loses on average.

Once a point is set, a player on the pass line can add an odds bet behind it. The chance of making each point, and what the odds bet pays on it, are below.

PointChance of rolling it before a 7Odds bet pays
433.33%2 to 1
540.00%3 to 2
645.45%6 to 5
845.45%6 to 5
940.00%3 to 2
1033.33%2 to 1

The odds bet pays true odds. A 4 is made 3 ways and a 7 is rolled 6 ways, so a 4 loses as often as it wins twice over, and the bet pays 2 to 1. The same holds for 5 and 9 at 3 to 2, and for 6 and 8 at 6 to 5. That leaves the odds bet with no house edge.

Combined with the pass line, the edge on all the money at risk falls to 0.85% when the table allows 1x odds, 0.61% at 2x and 0.37% at 3-4-5x. The pass bet’s expected loss in dollars does not change. The combined figure is lower because more money is bet at no edge.

Place bets, the field, hardways and one-roll bets

Place bets back a single number to roll before a 7. Place 6 or 8 pays 7 to 6 and carries a 1.52% edge. Place 4 or 10 pays 9 to 5 and carries 6.67%.

The field is a one-roll bet on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12, winning 44.44% of the time. Where 2 and 12 both pay 2 to 1, its edge is 5.56%. Where the 12 pays 3 to 1, the edge is 2.78%.

Hardways pay when a number rolls as a pair before it rolls any other way or a 7 comes. Hard 6 or hard 8 pays 9 to 1 for a 9.09% edge; hard 4 or hard 10 pays 7 to 1 for 11.11%. Any 7, a one-roll bet paying 4 to 1, carries 16.67%, the highest edge in the chart above.

These payouts are the common table. The table posted at a game can pay differently, and a different payout gives a different edge, so read the layout before betting.

Baccarat odds

Baccarat has three bets. The figures below come from dealing out every possible hand, card by card, from an eight-deck shoe under the standard drawing rules.

Baccarat betChance it winsHouse edge
Banker (5% commission)45.86%1.06%
Player44.62%1.24%
Tie (pays 8 to 1)9.52%14.36%
Eight decks, every deal counted card by card under the standard drawing rules. A tie returns banker and player bets.

The banker wins 45.86% of hands, the player 44.62% and the tie 9.52%. The banker bet pays even money less a 5% commission, which leaves a house edge of 1.06%. The player bet pays even money for an edge of 1.24%.

The tie pays 8 to 1 and carries a 14.36% edge. Banker and player push on a tie, so their edges are measured on every hand dealt.
