A point spread priced at -110 on both sides leaves the sportsbook a margin of about 4.5%. A slot with a 96% return to player keeps 4% of what is wagered over the long run. Some table games cost less than either: Wizard of Odds puts the banker bet in eight-deck baccarat at 1.06% and blackjack played correctly at 0.43% under Atlantic City rules.
The difference that matters: sports prices move with the betting, and a casino game’s math stays where its design put it. Here is how each is priced.
How sports betting odds carry the margin
At -110 you risk $110 to win $100. A favorite at -6.5 must win by seven or more to cover; the underdog covers by losing by six or fewer, or by winning. A moneyline drops the spread: a favorite at -150 asks $150 to win $100, and a total asks whether the combined score goes over or under a number.
Every price implies a probability. At -110 each side implies 52.38% (110 divided by 210), so the two sides add up to 104.76%. The sportsbook’s hold is the share of that 104.76 that is not paid back: 4.76 divided by 104.76, or 4.5%.
How online casino games carry it
A regulated casino game pays out by a fixed design, run by a random number generator. Return to player, or RTP, is the long-run share paid back: a 96% slot returns $96 of every $100 wagered over a very large number of spins.
Volatility decides how that return arrives. Two slots with the same 96% RTP can feel nothing alike: one pays small wins often, the other goes long stretches without paying and then pays big. Table games sit lower on cost, which is where the 1.06% banker bet and the 0.43% blackjack figure come from.
Where the two compare
The posted price at a sportsbook is not fixed. If you find the same game at -105 on both sides instead of -110, each side implies 51.22% and the hold falls to 2.4%, about half. Shopping several sportsbooks for the better number is the main lever a sports bettor has. A casino game’s RTP is set by its design and does not move with the betting on it.
Bonuses change the math for a while on both sides. A deposit match or an odds boost is worth only what is left after its wagering requirements, so read those before counting it as value.
Where both are legal
Online casino US play is legal in far fewer states than sports betting, and the list changes as states pass new laws. Check your own state’s gaming regulator before you sign up anywhere, and play only with operators it has licensed, since those are the ones it can hold to account.
