College Basketball Picks and Predictions

Free college basketball picks and predictions, from the first week of November to the national championship. Our number beside the line, then bet or pass.

The pick, then the reasons

Our college basketball predictions are built to lead with the decision: this side, at this number or better, or no bet. Then the line we read and where, our number for the game, and the gap between them.

No bet is a normal answer in this sport. A Division I season runs to thousands of games; we pass when the price and our number agree, and say so.

The college basketball year

Non-conference games fill November and December, from early-season tournaments to buy games against small schools. Conference play runs from late December to early March. Then come the conference tournaments in early March, and the NCAA field of 68 plays through to a title game in the first week of April.

In 2025-26 that came to 6,300 games involving Division I teams. The NCAA tournament was 67 of them.

Who beat the number

Forget the rankings. In 2025-26 the best record against the spread among 365 teams with 20 or more decided games belonged to Stephen F. Austin, 23-9. Howard went 22-9, Fresno State 21-9. At the bottom, Kansas City covered 5 times in 27.

Creighton and Mississippi State sat near the bottom, 10-23 and 10-22. A big name is no edge against the number. One season of covers is one season; next year resets it.

Conference play is tighter

Two different seasons sit inside one. Outside conference play the average spread was 12.2 points, and many games had no line at all. Inside it the average was 6.5: conference games are priced much closer.

The results followed the closeness. Favorites covered 49.9% of non-conference games with a line, and 47.5% of conference games, 1,738 in 3,657. Unders had a small edge in conference play, 1,877 to 1,780. Small leans, big samples. Worth knowing, not worth betting blind.

Betting the total

College totals in 2025-26 went under a little more often than over at every size. Totals of 155 or more went over 704 times in 1,443; totals under 135, 176 in 368.

The NCAA tournament

March is its own market. In the 67 NCAA tournament games of 2026, favorites won 49 and covered 36. The overs went 33 to 34. The tournament scored 149.7 points a game, against 150.1 for the rest of the season.

The upsets came at moderate prices. Iowa beat Florida 73-72 at +455 as a 10.5-point underdog. High Point beat Wisconsin 83-82 at +400. And the national championship ended on the number: Michigan beat UConn 69-63 as a 6.5-point favorite, so UConn covered by losing.

The long shots

College basketball produces long winning prices every season. In 2025-26 underdogs won 1,539 games with a price on them. The longest was New Orleans over TCU in November, 78-74, at +2500. Mercyhurst beat Loyola Chicago at +2000; Portland beat Gonzaga at +1800 in February.

Here is the honest read. Those are a handful of games among six thousand. They happen, and the prices say how seldom. Nobody builds a card on +2500.

How our college basketball number works

No single rule runs across college basketball yet. Each prediction states its number, how it was reached, and the gap it needs before it is a bet, so every pick can be checked. Once a rule settles, this section will state it in a sentence.

March Madness and the futures

The tournament has its own pages: our March Madness betting guide, national championship odds and the men’s Final Four. For the season as a whole, read our college basketball betting guide.

College basketball betting tips, straight

  • Bet the number, not the name. The best cover records in 2025-26 belonged to schools most people never watch.
  • Treat November and February as different sports. Spreads were nearly twice as big outside conference play, and scoring fell through the season.
  • Lean under, but only a little. Every band of total went under slightly more often than over.
  • In March, price every game fresh. A tournament favorite won 49 of 67 and covered 36. The bracket is not the bet.
  • Pass on most of the board. Thousands of games, few gaps worth taking.
