The 2027 men’s NCAA tournament is the first with 76 teams. Selection Sunday is March 14, 2027, play starts on Tuesday, March 16, and the Final Four is at Ford Field in Detroit on April 3 and 5. Michigan won the 2026 title, 69-63 over UConn on April 6, 2026, in Indianapolis.

How the 76-team bracket works
The field grows from 68 teams to 76 in 2027, so there are eight more places. Every conference still gets one automatic bid, and the committee fills the rest with at-large teams. NCAA.com puts the share of teams that now get a spot at 21%, up from 18%.
The old First Four becomes the March Madness Opening Round. It has 12 games instead of four, played on Tuesday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 17 at UD Arena in Dayton and INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita. The 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers play six of those games, and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams play the other six. The 12 winners join the round of 64.
From there the calendar is the familiar one. The round of 64 is on Thursday and Friday, March 18 and 19, and the round of 32 is on Saturday and Sunday, March 20 and 21. The Sweet 16 follows on March 25 and 26, then the Elite Eight on March 27 and 28. The Final Four is on Saturday, April 3, and the championship game is on Monday, April 5.

The Final Four moves to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2028. In 2029 it goes back to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The bets March Madness offers
Point spreads are the main market. If Duke is -7.5 against a 12 seed, Duke has to win by 8 or more. The underdog side wins if it loses by 7 or fewer or wins outright. Both sides usually cost -110, which needs a 52.4% win rate to break even.
Moneylines are bets on who wins. Tournament underdogs pay well: a 12 seed at +250 needs to win only 28.6% of the time for the price to be fair. Our guide to moneyline betting has the arithmetic.

Seven prices in the table moved between the 07:52 UTC read on Monday, November 2 and this one. Duke went from +550 to +500 and is still the favorite. Florida went from +600 to +650, Illinois from +1400 to +1300, Texas from +1900 to +2000 and Arizona from +2000 to +2400. Houston went from +2800 to +2500 and is now in the table. Michigan, the defending champion, went from +4000 to +4500. UConn at +1200 and Michigan State at +1800 did not move. The board prices 102 teams at both reads.
The 102 implied chances add up to 145.2%, against 145.1% at the November 2 read. A fair market would add up to 100%, so the book’s margin on this one is about 45 points. Each implied chance is 100 divided by the price plus 100. A futures bet is worth making only when you rate a team’s chance higher than its price does.

Numbers worth reading before you bet a game
KenPom’s adjusted efficiency ratings rate every team by points scored and allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents. The gap between two teams’ ratings is a quick check on whether a spread is roughly right.
The four factors explain where a team’s efficiency comes from: effective field goal percentage, turnover rate, offensive rebounding rate and free throw rate. A team that wins on offensive rebounds plays differently from one that wins on shooting, and that matters against a specific opponent.
Tempo sets the total. Two teams that play slowly produce fewer possessions and fewer points, so a total that looks low may be the right number. In the 2026 final, DraftKings closed the total at 146.5, and Michigan and UConn scored 132.
Strength of schedule separates a 28-4 record against weak teams from a 22-10 record in a strong conference. Seeding tries to account for it. The gap between a team’s seed and its efficiency rating is often where a tournament price is off.
Tips for tournament betting
Shop between books. In a 12-game Opening Round and a 32-game first round, lines differ, and half a point on a spread is worth more over a tournament than most tips.
Travel and venue matter. The first- and second-round sites run from Pittsburgh to Sacramento, and a team playing near home can have a crowd edge.
Watch the lines move. A spread that moves a point or more without injury news means money has come in on one side, and the number you wanted may be gone by tip-off.
