As 2020 winds down, there are still a few early prep races to be run as part of the 2021 Kentucky Derby Trail. The first is Friday’s Springboard Mile at Remington Park. Saturday’s featured event is the Los Alamitos Futurity.

2020 Remington Springboard Mile Picks
When: Friday, December 18th 2020
Where: Remington Park
This ungraded stakes race is open to two-year old Thoroughbreds. The mile run will be contested on the dirt track at Remington.
The 11-horse field is set for Friday’s featured event on Remington’s race card. With the post positions and morning line odds in place, Outadore will break from the No. 9 post as the 3/1 favorite. Trained by Wesley Ward, jockey David Cabrera as been tapped to get the ride.
This two-year old Kentucky-bred colt has made an early name for himself by taking third in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland. This followed a victory in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint on Sept. 12. It will be interesting to see how well he makes the transition to dirt.

Second on the list at 4/1 is trainer Steve Asmussen’s Cowan. He will break from the No. 8 post with Stewart Elliott as his jockey. This is another two-year old colt bred in Kentucky that had success in the Breeders’ Cup. He placed second in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The son of Kantharos has finished in the money four times in five events.
The third choice for the Springboard is Joe Frazier at 5/1 odds on the morning line. He drew the No. 10 post to keep the top three favorites breaking together from the outside. The son of Distorted Humor is trained by Brad Cox and Richard Eramia will be his jockey in this race.
A few other entries to add to the mix are Number One Dude at 6/1 and Game Day Plan at 10/1. Looking at the entire field, the best bet on a win ticket would be Asmussen’s Cowan.
2020 Los Alamitos Futurity Picks
When: Saturday, December 19th 2020
Where: Los Alamitos Race Course
This is a Grade 2 stakes race open to two-year old Thoroughbreds. It will contested on the dirt covering a total distance of 1 1/16 miles.
The field for Saturday’s main event at Los Alamitos is still coming together. Horse Racing Nation has identified a few of the top contenders listed as probable. Topping the list is trainer John Shirreffs’ Red Flag. The son of Tamarkuz has the highest HRN rating in the projected field at 6.69.
He is coming off a victory in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 15. The Kentucky-bred colt covered the seven furlongs on dirt in 1:23.56.

Famed trainer Bob Baffert is looking to run Classier in this race. With a HRN rating of 5.76, the some of Empire Maker is looking to improve on his eighth-place finish in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Prior to that race, he won a Maiden Special Weight race at Santa Anita on Oct. 24.
Baffert could also go with Spielberg coming off a fourth-place run in the Bob Hope. His current HRN rating stands at 5.19.
