The 2021-22 La Liga will be Spain’s premier football league’s 91st season. It gets underway on August, 13, 2021, and will conclude on May 22, 2022. Atletico Madrid returns as the defending champion having won the club’s 11th La Liga title.
It’s no secret that Barcelona has been the talk of La Liga this offseason. The club has a roster that rivals the best in the world with its offseason acquisitions. It’s why Barca is the early favorite to capture its 27th La Liga championship.
Barcelona’s Offseason Moves
Barcelona finished third in 2020-21 behind champion Atletico Madrid and runner-up Real Madrid. In the offseason, Barca added two more stars to their already glowing roster. Memphis Depay, one of the best players in the Netherlands, signed with the club after scoring 20 goals for Lyon in France’s Ligue 1 last season.
Sergio Aguero, who is one of the best strikers of all-time, returns to La Liga with Barcelona. Aguero, who played for Atletico Madrid from 2006 to 2011, has 385 career goals. He spent the last decade playing for Manchester City in the Premier League.
Perhaps Barcelona’s biggest offseason move was its re-signing of superstar Lionel Messi. The La Liga scoring leader in each of the last five seasons, Messi took a pay cut to stay with the club he has represented for over a decade.
These three plus an extremely talented and deep roster is why Barcelona is the favorite to win this year’s La Liga at +120.
Top Contenders
The two clubs challenging Barcelona for the La Liga title are no surprise either. Since the 2011-12 season, the top three each season has been made up of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. The last club other than the Big Three to finish first, second, or third was Valencia which ended up third in three straight seasons (’09-’10, ’10-’11, and ’11-’12).
Real Madrid is next on the board at +150 with a roster that can match Barcelona, especially if the club can sign Kylian Mbappe. The French forward, who plays for PSG in Ligue 1, is not likely to end up with Madrid, but the club rehired manager Carlo Ancelotti. The legendary coach has led Madrid to a Copa Del Rey trophy, a Champions League trophy, and the UEFA Super Cup.
Atletico Madrid is listed at +330 and should boast the same roster as last season. Luis Suarez, a former teammate of Messi in Barcelona, leads a roster that can challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona just as they did a year ago.
Underdogs?
If you’re looking for a longshot to play in La Liga this season, there aren’t many choices. As said before, La Liga has been dominated by Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid for almost a decade.
The only other club worthy of consideration is Sevilla, which is listed at +1500 to win this season. But, considering the Big Three rosters are loaded with big-name talent, Sevilla just doesn’t compare. Plus, players like Ivan Rakitic and Fernando are 33 years old.
2021/22 La Liga Outright Winner Pick
Barcelona won back-to-back titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19 and hasn’t won since. The club did everything in its power to make sure this season would end in a La Liga title. Messi is surrounded by talent everywhere and the club has the best coach in the league. It’s a safe pick, but it’s also the best pick.
