The BMW PGA Championship is set for this week in England as the PGA Tour and European Tour wind things up before the Ryder Cup. The clear favorite heading into the opening round at the historic Wentworth club is Viktor Hovland at +900. He’s the only player under the +1000 mark with Tyrrell Hatton at +1400.

Hatton won the BMW PGA Championship last year by four strokes over Victor Perez and by five strokes over Patrick Reed who finished 14 under for the week. Reed is not playing this year following a recent bout with pneumonia and a 25th place finish last week in Atlanta.

Hovland is coming off a T5 finish at Eastlake in Atlanta and a PGA Tour season that has him finishing the year with a win and eleven finishes inside the top ten. Here are the favorites through +2000 to win the 2021 BMW PGA Championship outright according to Intertops.

Wentworth is a classic European course but with a few more trees. Don’t expect the whispy brown grass you’re used to seeing during the Open Championship. Wentworth makes full use of the trees and water on the course which is a bit short compared to general PGA and European Tour courses.

That does not mean it is any easier – while players don’t have to hit the longball every time there are still plenty of ways to get into trouble on a course with par-five holes ranging around 555 yards.

“I think it’s a great golf course,” Jon Rahm stated. “That’s why I love coming back to Europe to play these traditional-style golf courses, where they are not long, on paper, ideally, they are not overly complicated but things can get difficult for a player real quick. They make you think about it. You can be as aggressive or as conservative as you want off the tee and make it fun that way.”

The course was recently renovated by Ernie Els and originally designed by Harry Colt. The greens are undulating with creeping Bentgrass. There may be some rain during the event but the course features sub-air systems under the greens so that won’t be a problem if things get a bit moist.

Viktor Hovland +900

The former Oklahoma State player from Norway has been nothing short of amazing since hitting the PGA Tour in 2019. This year he’s climbed to the No. 14 spot on the Official World Golf Rankings and is 5th in the FedEx Cup rankings. Two years ago here he posted for rounds of 70 or better. Last week he was T5 at East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood +1800

Tommy Fleetwood was T2 at the Italian Open last week and ended his season on the PGA Tour this year with only two finishes inside the top ten. That means he’ll have to earn his Tour card back but he’s already locked up a spot on the European Ryder Cup team.

Ian Poulter +2800

Ian Poulter finished 5th last year at this event and is most certainly hoping his short game is tuned in. Poulter finished the St. Jude Invitational WGC event T10 and scored a T3 earlier this year at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Poulter is great when it comes to his short game which will be important this week.

Others: Don’t discount Tyrell Hatton (+1400) too much. Hatton plays well at Wentworth and if his short game is kicking then he should be near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday. Justin Rose (+3300) pulled out a T10 at the Wyndham Championship after a three-tournament swing of being outside the top-thirty. His game is suited for Wentworth.
