This Saturday’s race betting card proves the point with five major graded events on the schedule offering a total of $2.1 million in prize money. The Grade 1 Keeneland Turf Mile has the highest purse on the list at $750,000. This race will feature some of the top turf race horses three and older.

The biggest event for fillies and mares three years old and up is the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes with $400,000 up for grabs. Also on the card is the Grade 2 Woodford Stakes for Thoroughbreds three and older along with Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes for fillies and mares three and older.

2021 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Predictions

When: Saturday, October 9th 2021

As part of this season’s coverage of the 2022 Kentucky Derby Trail, I have set my sights on Saturday’s Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity. This Grade 1 stakes race is open to two-year old Thoroughbreds. The total prize purse for this year’s event is set at $500,000.

Horse Racing Nation has listed five contenders as probable for the 1 1/16 mile run on the dirt track at Keeneland. As the final field comes together, I am going with the following projected entries as my Win-Place-Show bets.

Win – Double Thunder

Trained by Todd Pletcher, this two-year old Kentucky-bred colt has already caught bettors’ eyes with a 6.44 HRN rating in his young career. He has competed in four events as a juvenile with a trio of victories.

Sired by Super Saver, he also has the pedigree to earn a spot on the 2022 Kentucky Derby Trail. His biggest win so far was in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 26. He completed the six-furlong sprint in 1:11.17. Saturday’s race should be an excellent challenge at a much longer distance against a much stronger field.

Place – Rattle N Roll

My second choice in this year’s Breeders’ Futurity is trained by Kenneth McPeek. This is another two-year old Kentucky-bred colt that has shown quite a bit of promise in his early racing career. The son of Connect also comes from a strong pedigree that can be traced back to Holy Bull.

So far it has been an up and down ride with Rattle N Roll that includes a fade to eighth in a Maiden Special Weight race at Saratoga during the summer. However, I am more focused on the fall with his recent victory at Churchill in a 1 1/16 miles Maiden Special Weight race on Sept. 23. He covered that distance on dirt in 1:44.83.

What Is an Exacta Bet?

Show – Classic Causeway

Rounding out a trifecta play for this race is the son of Giant’s Causeway. Trained by Brian Lynch, this Kentucky-bred colt made his racing debut at Saratoga on Sept. 4. He came away with a victory in a Maiden Special Weight event covering seven furlongs on the dirt. His winning time in that race was 1:22.67.

The longer distance of this race will be a test. Yet, in a short field he will be able to run at his preferred pace. He is not the best colt on the track in this year’s Breeders’ Futurity, but I like his chances to finish in the money.
