2021 Preakness Stakes Odds and Predictions

The second leg of this year’s Triple Crown horse racing series is set for Saturday, May 15 with the running of the 146 th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Post time is set for 6:47 p.m. (ET) as the featured race on a full card of major graded stakes events.

Where to Bet on the Preakness Stakes

Following Tuesday’s post position draw, there are 10 entries in this year’s Preakness led by Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit. There is also a cloud of controversy surrounding the second jewel in the crown after trainer Bob Baffert’s prized three-year old colt tested positive for a banned substance following his impressive victory at Churchill Downs at 12-1 odds.

The son of Protonico remains eligible to run in Saturday’s race but he could still be stripped of his Kentucky Derby title pending the outcome of a second test. None the less, Medina Spirit has been opened as the 9-5 favorite to win on the morning line. He will break from the No. 3 gate with John Velazquez as his jockey.

2021 Preakness Stakes Preview

The other big storyline for this year’s Preakness is Baffert’s other entry for this race. Concert Tour was held out of the Kentucky Derby after fading to third in this year’s Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in early April.

This three-year old Kentucky-bred colt did not race competitively as a juvenile but went on to win his first three races this year. After his victory in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita in early February, he went on to cement his spot as a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender by winning the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on March 13.

Sired by Street Sense, he comes into this race as a 5-2 second-favorite on the morning line. Breaking from the far outside at No. 10 is not the best starting position for this race. However, with veteran jockey Mike Smith aboard, Concert Tour would be my top pick to win.

The fourth-favorite on the board at 10-1 odds is another three-year old colt making his Triple Crown racing debut. Trainer Chad Brown and the team at Klaravich Stables decided to hold Crowded Trade out of the Kentucky Derby to better prepare for this race.

The son of More Than Ready has posted a trio of finishes in the money at Aqueduct Racetrack as a three-year old. Following a victory in a Maiden Special Weight race in his debut, he placed second in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes and third in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial.

This is another entry that should benefit from the added time to train for the 1 3/16 miles on dirt in this race. Crowded Trade will start No. 4 with Javier Castellano as his jockey.

One to Watch

Moving deeper down the list of entries for this race, my one to watch is trainer Todd Pletcher’s Unbridled Honor at 15-1 odds. Breaking from post position No. 8, jockey Luis Saez will get the ride.

This three-year old Kentucky-bred colt placed second his last time out in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland. He was also right in the mix in March’s Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby with a fourth-place finish. His chances to be a factor in Saturday’s main event hinge on a clean break out of the gate.
