Talk about an exciting past week for golf fans! Team USA beat the Europeans during last week’s Ryder Cup in an exciting fashion. Now we switch gears from a targeted European-style course in Wisconsin at Whistling Straits to a classic Southern-style course in Mississippi. Next up is the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson Mississippi at the Country Club of Jackson.

Sam Burns comes in as the favorite in the limited field event at +1400 with Sergio Garcia among the favorites at +1800. Garcia joins the field fresh off the Ryder Cup event last week and he’s the defending Sanderson champion. He won last season by one stroke over Peter Malnati who was the winner of this tournament in 2015.

As for this being a limited-field event, time changes and fewer daylight hours signal the start of 144 player fields until a few months into 2022. Now that the Sanderson Farms Championship is a full-schedule event and not an alternate, the stakes have risen. The winner gets 500 FedEx Cup points instead of 300 and all of the benefits of a PGA Tour win including an automatic trip to the Masters.

This course can play deceptively tight! The Country Club of Jackson features multiple white- sand bunkers set to defend tight approach shots. Water hazards come into play on a few holes with pond grass along the sides of some fairways. It looks wide open but players can get into some rough second shots if not careful.

The course is a natural setting with mostly open fairways dotted with large trees. The course has undergone many renovations over the years with the latest being by John Faught in 2008 which helped set the layout for current PGA Tournaments.

Putting will be something to watch as some of the greens are deceptive and roughs will be playing a thick 3+inches. A slight chance of rain and pop-up thunderstorms could be an issue on both Friday and Sunday.

Sam Burns comes in as the favorite this week after a great run last season that include his first PGA Tour win. He’s played this event five times with a T3 in 2018. Last season he won the Valspar Championship, came in second at the AT&T Byron Nelson and had a 3 rd place run at the Genesis Invitational.

Harold Varner III +3300

Harold Varner III was strong two weeks ago at the Fortinet Championship before the Ryder Cup. Varner finished that event T16 with some clutch shots and a strong putter. He enters the Sanderson Farms Championship with a string of top-20 runs including five in his last seven events.

Luke List +9000

A possible dark horse? Luke List is a player that seems on the verge of a win every time he’s inside the top 20! Last season List was a player pushing for a victory during several events including a T4 at the John Deere Classic which he followed up with a T5 at the Barbasol Championship. List carded over ten missed cuts last season but he also posted six top-20s.

Others: I want to look at Sergio Garcia (+1800) but I’m wary after such an emotional event as the Ryder Cup. He’s well worth watching. Keegan Bradley (+3300) plays a tight game that is well suited to the Country Club of Jackson. He finished T4 here last year.
