2022 3M Open Odds and Picks

The Open, aka the British Open, is in the books with Cameron Smith hoisting the Cup! This week Smith takes some time off but the PGA Tour rolls on with the 3M Open teeing off Thursday at TPC Twin Pines. Last year’s 3M Open was won by a different Cam – and that was Cameron Champ who returns to defend his win.

Champ powered through the week last year for a 15-under total of 269. That was two strokes better than Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, and Jhonattan Vegas who all finished T2. That 269 finish was the highest score in the event’s three-year history.

Michael Thompson won the 2020 3M with a total of 265/−19 which was two strokes better than Adam Long. In 2019, Matthew Wolff finished 263/−21 winning by one stroke over both Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa.

This year the favorite coming into Thursday’s opening round is Tony Finau at +1500. Last year he finished the event T28 after posting a disappointing 70 on the final day. He finished last week at the Open T28, not a typo, but shot a 66 on the Old Course on Sunday. He’s followed by Hideki Matsuyama +1600 who has two wins this season.

This year the field will be different due to player defections to the Saudi-run LIV Golf organization. And it’s one of the last three events in the PGA regular season so players are trying to grab as many FedEx points as possible. Last year’s favorites, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed are no longer PGA players.

Here are the favorites to win the 2022 3M Open outright:

Tony Finau +1200

Hideki Matsuyama +1600

Sungjae Im +2000

Adam Hadwin +2200

Maverick McNealy +2200

2022 3M Open Preview

Where: Blaine, Minnesota

Course: TPC Twin Cities

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 71

Length: 7,431

When: July 21-24, 2022

Purse: $7.5 Million.

TV Coverage: CBS/Golf Channel

Twin Cities is not packed with trees but there are a bunch more than you saw last week at The Open. Those players who took part in the Barbasol or Barracuda tournaments should feel right at home. Hazards are well placed in the form of several massive bunkers and there’s plenty of water that comes into play. The greens this week are around 6,500 square feet with plenty of undulation and drain-off areas so expect some missed putts!

The weather this week is setting up to be nice with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s and low 80s in the afternoon. There’s a slight chance of pop-up rain showers every day but nothing that should threaten play.

2022 3M Open Predictions

Tony Finau +1200

Tony Finau did not string together four great rounds at The Open last week but he nailed it on the final day with his blistering 66 on Sunday. Finau now hopes that momentum carries over to this week at The 3M. He finished 2nd at the Canadian Open behind Rory and had a T3 at the Mexico Open a few weeks before. He’s 3 for 3 at the 3M with a T3 finish here last season.

Chez Reavie +3300

Chez Reavie won the 2022 Barracuda Championship by sinking birdies and avoiding bogies. His putter was strong which will be needed at TPC Twin Cities. He finished T11 at the 3M Open last season but was among the players at the top of the leader board on Saturday where he ended the day at T3. He’s now 49th on the FedEx rankings and moving towards breaking the No. 100 spot on the OWGR.

Adam Svensson +4000

Adam Svensson has quietly put together a run of great outings. He’s played on the weekend in his last seven tournaments with several top-25 finishes. He finished sole 6th at the Barbasol Championship, was T7 at the Sony Open, and T9 at the Honda Classic. He’s 29th on the Tour in Birdie Average.

Others: Hideki Matsuyama (+1600) could certainly grab the win here this week but he’ll have to get past some inconsistent play. DQ at the Memorial, 4th at the U.S. Open, missed the cut at Scottish Open, and T68 at the Open. Adam Long (+3300) has been finishing T25 or better for much of the season. He has a 67.17 scoring average over his last six rounds at TPC Twin Cities.
