2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open Odds and Picks

The World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba is over. Now the question is if Russell Henley can win back-to-back PGA TOUR tournaments. Henley won at Mayakoba in fine form and he’s a former winner at the Houston Open. Does that make him the outright favorite heading into Thursday’s opening round? Short answer – nope.

PGA Bookies

Instead, oddsmakers are looking toward Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. Scheffler is the No. 2 ranked golfer in the world and comes in at +550 while Sam Burns trails at +1100. Things start to open up down the odds list as this is a week where possible value picks are everywhere. A great example is Harris English at +6600.

Here are the top five favorites to win outright:

Scottie Scheffler +550

Sam Burns +1100

Aaron Wise +1600

Tony Finau +1800

Hideki Matsuyama +2000

Memorial Park Golf Course is a public course that is a stunner. The fairways can play tight, landing zones are tricky, and bunkers will swallow a ball. That is if a tee shot goes wild. If not, then players should be safe to make it to the greens with little trouble.

Still, there are plenty of areas where scrambling skills will come in handy. Greens are Tifdwarf grass while fairways are Bermuda. Byron Nelson claimed the first modern-era trophy in 1946. But the original Houston Open was first played in 1922. Since then, there have only been nine players that have won this tournament more than once.

2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open Predictions

Scottie Scheffler +550

Scottie Scheffler finished T3 last week at Mayakoba by going 18 under in a tough field that saw Russell Henley card the win at 23 under. Still, Scheffler yielded a steady hand on his full bag which included his putter. Scheffler can take advantage of that skill again with the trimmed areas surrounding the greens at Memorial.

Sam Burns +1100

Sam Burns has finished T7 in his last two visits to the Houston Open. He plays this course well and has nice touch around the thicker roughs that the venue is known for during this tournament. Burns has been busy during the fall portion of the schedule. He was part of the winning Presidents Cup team, finished T30 at Sanderson Farms, and recovered with a T7 at the CJ Cup.

Sahith Theegala +3300

Sahith Theegala has looked at times as if he could go on a winning streak. Only a few strokes here and there have seemingly kept him from winning on the PGA TOUR, or at least being in position on Sunday. A bit inconsistent in the last few events, but the California native has carded a T6 and a T5 in his last four outings.

Others: I want to run with Tony Finau (+1800) this week as he had been a force heading into the new season. But he look completely off last week at Mayakoba where he missed the cut. He may need another outing to knock the dust off. Russell Henley (+2200) was on fire last week but this course plays completely differently than where he outpaced the field at Mayakoba. And, it’s tough to go back to back on the PGA TOUR.
