2022 CJ Cup Odds and Predictions

Once again, the CJ Cup has a different venue and an even stronger field than in years past. The CJ Cup was one of the signature events on the PGA schedule known as the “PGA Asian Swing” but COVID-19 changed that and it’s being played in the United States for the 3rd straight season.

That may have helped bolster the field yet again as six of the world’s top-ten players entered. That includes Rory Rory McIlroy who comes in at +700 and Jon Rahm at +800. Rory, like other top-ranked players, is jumping in for this event.

This season the CJ Cup is taking place at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. If it sounds familiar that’s because it was the venue for the Palmetto Championship which was a replacement event in 2021 for the COVID-canceled RBC Canadian Open. Plus, FedEx points and an increased purse are on the line!

One thing that makes the CJ Cup exciting is that it is a limited-field no-cut event! And, it is packed with less than 80 of the best players from the PGA, Korean Tour, Asian Tour, winners of the GENESIS Championship and KPGA Championship, and exemption players. There are also plenty of Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players teeing off.

Here are the favorites to win the 2022 CJ Cup outright:

Rory McIlroy +700

Jon Rahm +800

Scottie Scheffler +1200

Justin Thomas +1400

Congaree does not look like a typical South Carolina course! It was designed by Tom Fazio with a leaning towards dryer Australian venues. That being said, green is everywhere on the fairways, but then… sand. This course has a more targeted, and European, link feels with limited roughs draining into the sand, rocks, and natural bunkers. Lowcountry features come into play. Accuracy off the tee will be at a premium along with putting. Greens run large, about 6150 sq feet, with firm and fast Bermuda.

2022 CJ Cup Picks

Rory McIlroy +700

Rory McIlroy may be well rested after a blistering string of months where he was one of the best players on the PGA and DP World Tours. All while being the frontman for protecting the PGA Tour from the LIV Exhibition Series. McIlroy comes in after a few weeks off following one of his strongest seasons yet. He’s the favorite outright, has a perfect game for this course, and is a known force with his wedges and scrambling game.

Justin Thomas +1400

Justin Thomas had a great 2021-2022 season and was a force at the recent Presidents Cup going 4-1-0 during his events. That was the last time Thomas was active so he comes in completely rested after a long grind leading up to the Presidents Cup. Thomas should be able to work some magic with his putter on the Bermuda greens.

Sahith Theegala +5000

Sahith Theegala is who I would consider if I was looking down the list for value! The California native finished T5 at the ZOZO and T4 at the Fortinet Championship. Theegala posted a T2 last season at the Travelers and had a strong showing at the TOUR Championship before sliding and carding a 28th place finish. He’s moved to No. 52 on the OWGR.

Others: Sungjae Im (+2200) was a bit rough last week at the CJ Cup but rebounded for a T29. That could just be a minor fluke following a busy couple of weeks. Tommy Fleetwood (+6600) should love the greens at Congaree. Fleetwood closed out last season with a T5 at the PGA Championship and T4s at both the Open Championship and the Scottish Open.
