The 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge is on Sunday, May 29th 2022.
Known as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, 33 drivers will race 500 miles to determine the winner. This is a race where there’s often value in betting on longshots to win outright.
Since 2016, four of the six winners of the Indianapolis 500 have been priced at 16/1 odds or higher. Last year, Helio Castroneves won as a 30/1 longshot and in 2020, Takuma Sato won at 16/1 odds.
The last time a driver won back-to-back Indy 500 races was over twenty years ago when Castroneves won the race in 2000 and 2001. He can repeat that feat on Sunday and he’s priced at 28/1 odds.
Top Contenders to Win the 2022 Indy 500
Three drivers are priced below 10/1 to win the Indy 500 on Sunday.
Scott Dixon (+550) is the favorite, Alex Palou (+600) is second in the market and Pato O’Ward (+900) is priced third in the outright winners market. Will either of these guys win the race?
Dixon has finished in the top 10 in all five NTT IndyCar Series races in 2022, but his best finish is 5th in the Grand Prix of Texas and Grand Prix of Alabama. He will start in pole position for the fifth time.
Dixon has won the Indy 500 once (2008) and he has finished in 2nd place three times in his career. He finished 2nd in the 2020 Indy 500 and 17th in the 2021 Indy 500. He’s always a threat to win.
Palou has four top 7 finishes in five races this season, but he hasn’t won a race yet. Palou has competed in the Indianapolis 500 twice, finishing 28th place in 2020 and 2nd place in 2021.
O’Ward has had mixed results in 2022. He won the Grand Prix of Alabama earlier this month, but he only has two top 10 finishes in five races. He’ll be looking for his first Indy 500 victory.
O’Ward didn’t qualify for the 2019 Indy 500 when he was with Carlin, but since moving to Arrow McLaren SP, he finished 6th place in the 2020 Indy 500 and 4th place in the 2021 Indy 500.
2022 Indy 500 Picks
Best Bets: Josef Newgarden (+1200) and Takuma Sato (+1800)
Newgarden has already won the Grand Prix of Texas and Grand Prix of Long Beach in 2022.
He has competed in the Indianapolis 500 ten times in his career with three top 5 finishes. He finished 4th place in 2019, 5th place in 2020 and 12th place in 2021. We like him to breakthrough this Sunday.
Our second selection to win the 2022 Indianapolis 500 is Sato. Sato won the Indy 500 in 2020 and 2017. He also has a 3rd place finish in this race in 2019. He’s always a threat to win the Indy 500.
With the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix and 2022 Indy 500 on Sunday, motorsports fans will have a busy week to get prepared for the two big races. Good luck and have fun this weekend.
