2022 Open Championship Odds and Picks

The Open Championship returns to the Old Course located in St. Andrews Scotland. with the 150th playing of the event. The tournament, sometimes known as The “British” Open, kicks off on Thursday with live coverage in the United States (ET) at around 2:30 am. The last time the tournament was held at the Old Course it was Zach Johnson over both Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen for the title.

This time around, Zach Johnson is buried down the odds list at +25000 heading into the opening round with Rory McIlroy coming in as the lone favorite at +950. Johnson has not won on the PGA Tour this year but he has had a run of several top-25 finishes including a season-best of T13 at the Texas Open.

McIlroy won the Open Championship in 2014 when it was played at Royal Liverpool. McIlroy has been a fixture on Sunday fighting for a win several times this season and he’s won twice. He won the CJ Cup early in the season and followed that up with a 2nd place finish at the Masters. His most recent win was at the Canadian Open.

John Rahm was last year’s lone favorite for the Open but comes in this season at +1200. Rahm was the top-ranked golfer for several weeks this season and is now No. 3. He has gone 1, 2, 3, this year with a win at the Mexico Open, a 2nd place finish at Tournament of Champions, and a T3 at the Farmers. Here are the favorites through +1400 to win the 2022 Open Championship outright.

Rory McIlroy +950

Jon Rahm +1200

Xander Schauffele +1400

Scottie Scheffler +1400

Jordan Spieth +1400

The highlight for many golf fans will be seeing Tiger Woods make his return to the sport after taking more time off to rehab his injuries. Some speculate that this could be his last time playing in the Open Championship and that he wanted to return as two of his three Open wins were at St. Andrews on the Old Course.

If you watched any of the Scottish Open this past week you’ll be instantly familiar with the type of course that players will be facing this week at the Old Course. St. Andrews is considered the oldest course and is a classic set of target golf links. The good news for players is that St. Andrews may play easier than last week’s tough four rounds at the Renaissance Club.

The weather and wind forecast both look favorable during much of the tournament. Still, players will need to avoid the tall grass and hit as many landing areas as possible to make it to the weekend.

2022 Open Championship Predictions

Rory McIlroy +950

Rory McIlroy is the favorite and looked impressive at the Canadian Open with his win. He’s been impressive all season long and seems to be enjoying the game more this season. If Rory can put all of the weight that he may be carrying as the most outspoken player against LIV golf aside, he’s been hard to beat. He skipped the Scottish Open but has been in Scotland soaking up as much practice as possible.

Shane Lowry +2200

Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush over Tommy Fleetwood by 6 strokes. He’s now ranked No. 22 in the world and moved to the 30th spot in FedEx points. This season on the PGA Tour he’s only missed three cuts and has finished T23 or better in eight of the 13 events he’s played in. He was T10 at the Canadian Open and had a 2nd place finish at the Honda Classic. He was T3 at both the Masters and the RBC Heritage.

Viktor Hovland +4000

Viktor Hovland only turned pro in 2019 but he’s become a constant towards the top of the leaderboard at many of the events he’s played. This season he’s played in 17 events and only missed three cuts. He went back-to-back with a win at Mayakoba and then at the Hero World Challenge. The downside is that he’s had a rough three outings with two of his missed cuts coming at the U.S. Open and then the Scottish Open.

Others: Tiger Woods (+5000) is making a return to a course where he’s won two Open Championships. You can never count Tiger out. Tommy Fleetwood (+3500) looked great at the Scottish Open where he finished T4 only three shots back. He was T5 at the PGA Championship.
