2022 PGA Championship Odds and Picks

The PGA Championship is here and being held at a revamped Southern Hills Country Club. The big stories for many include the fact that defending PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson is not playing. Probably due to the firestorm surrounding him about the rival golf league starting and Saudi Arabia. And – Tiger Woods is returning to the links! It’s his first appearance since playing in the Masters earlier this spring.

Regardless of the storyline involving Mickelson, they will still be teeing it up on Thursday for the opening round and the favorites on the leaderboard are tight! Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm top things off, as expected, and there are plenty of high-powered players right behind them on the odds list. Scheffler comes in at +1100 with Jon Rahm at +1200.

PGA Bookies

Both players have been spot on this season with their games. Scheffler has won four times this season – including the Masters. Rahm has won once on the season but has racked up several finishes inside 5th or better and he’s now ranked No. 2 in the world according to the OWGR. There are still the familiar names at the top and plenty of value opportunities further down.

Here are the top-five favorites to win the 2022 PGA Championship outright:

Scottie Scheffler +1100

Jon Rahm +1200

Rory McIlroy +1400

Justin Thomas +1400

Collin Morikawa +1800

Jordan Spieth +1800

2022 PGA Championship Preview

Where: Tulsa, Oklahoma

Course: Southern Hills Country Club

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 70

Length: 7,365

When: May 19 – 22, 2022

Purse: $12 Million.

TV Coverage: CBS/ESPN

Southern Hills has been revamped with yards added on but it is still a very playable course with a par 70. This is the 4th time the venue has hosted the PGA Championship which is a record. The last time the event was held here was in 2007 and that was when went back to back by also winning the 2006 PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club.

The course has transformed over the years. Gone are the tight tree-lined fairways which opened up the playing area. Small creeks have been opened up and brought into play and many of the bunkers have been moved and reshaped. Greens are small in comparison and well protected. The big thing here is that all greens have been reworked to gently drain balls away from the center.

Approach shots and skillful putter play will be how this tournament is won.

2022 PGA Championship Predictions

Scottie Scheffler +1100

Scottie Scheffler is the favorite heading into the opening round as can be expected due to his level of play this season. He’s carded four wins on the year and his form looks as good as ever. Scheffler recently played a practice round at Southern Hills with some impressive results. He finished with a 64. The temps will be hotter this week which may change how he plays and his practice round was more leisurely than playing in the PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth +1800

Jordan Spieth is looking for yet another Major tournament to add to his resume! Winning the PGA Championship would give him a career Grand Slam. Spieth is always good with his game at this type of course which combines some of the traits of Augusta National with a splash of design that’s more in line with targeted play courses. This season he has won a tournament, finished sole 2nd twice, and was on the winning Team USA Ryder Cup team. His only fault this year, missing the cut in three events.

Sam Burns +4000

Sam Burns has quietly become a force on the PGA schedule in his 7 th year as a Pro. He’s won twice this season and is now No. 2 on the FedEx points list. He’s also moved to the 13 th spot on the OWGR rankings. Burns could take full advantage of the forgiving fairways at Southern Hills while then putting his approach game to work. The fade against Burns is that even with the amount of success he’s had this year he’s still failed to make it to the weekend five times this season.

Others I Like: Rory McIlroy (+1400) was close to grabbing his career Grand Slam several weeks ago at the Masters. The changes to Southern Hills should play in his favor. Tiger Woods (+6600) has rested since his return to golf at the Masters where he made the cut while limping around Augusta. That took some serious guts! If he’s focused, and even slightly more healthy than he was at the Masters then he should be considered a contender.
