2022 QBE Shootout Odds and Picks

The QBE Shootout is this weekend and it once again features some big names combined into two-player teams. The Shootout has become a staple for PGA Players during the slower winter months for several reasons. It’s fun and the purse is now pushing towards four million bucks! Plus this year there will be two LPGA professionals taking part.

This year’s field is once again packed with “big-name” players one of them being LPGA star Lexi Thompson. Also set to tee it up this season is Nella Korda. The two are not playing together in the 54-hole three-day event that has a modified format.

Golf Bookmakers

Thompson is teamed up with Maverick McNealy while Korda is with Denny McCarthy with both teams coming in at +3300. The favorites coming into the opening day are Jason Day and teammate Billy Horschel who are the outright favorites at +450.

If you’re not familiar with the QBE Shootout then here’s a quick briefer, the event is an “unofficial” money event meaning no FedEx points are awarded. It consists of a select number of two-person teams using a modified format.

Think of it like it was a smaller version of the formats used in the Ryder Cup with a smaller amount of parties for the fans. Instead, fans of the QBE Shootout have several days of Pro-Am events to take in, a fan experience area, and a mini music festival. But we are here for the golf!

Here are the top contenders to win the 2022 QBE Shootout outright:

Jason Day / Billy Horschel +450

Tom Hoge / Sahith Theegala +600

Harris English / Matt Kuchar +650

Here’s how the formats will be played over the three days. It is a three-day event with no cut that utilizes variations of play such as “fourball”, “Best Ball, and “Greensomes” which is a modified version of “Alternate Shot” play. Essentially, some of the best players in the world will tee off using some of the same formats that many of us play during local tournaments.

FRIDAY: The opening round will be played using a traditional scramble format. Both members of each team will have up to two swings from the same spot until either player completes the hole out.

SATURDAY: The second round will be played using a modified alternate shot format. Each golfer will tee off on every hole. Then the teammates will alternate shots until the hole is finished using the same ball.

SUNDAY: The tournament closes out with a traditional Four-Ball format. All of the golfers will play their ball during this round. Teammates will only officially record the lowest score between the two.

The Tiburón Golf Club has played host to the QBE Shootout 22 times. The course is beautiful and has big greens with a very manageable rough. There are plenty of scenic water features that come into play. Think about any Florida golf course with water runoff and management areas.

2022 QBE Shootout Predictions

Jason Day / Billy Horschel +450

This looks to be the team to beat at the QBE Shootout this year. Jason Day was a winner here back in 2014. That was when he was paired with Cameron Tringale who has left the PGA to play LIV Exhibition events. Day has racked up 17 professional wins since he turned pro in 2006. Billy Horschel makes for a nice partner with seven PGA TOUR wins on his resume. He’s a regular at the QBE but has yet to be part of a winning team. This may be the year!

Harris English / Matt Kuchar +650

The band is back together again! Harris English and Matt Kuchar have teamed up to win this event three times. That’s the QBE Shootout record when it comes to teammates. The Trivia is that other players have won here three times but not with the same partner. So, this is the pair that has the most winning experience at that event. They should be able to pull that off again. The only fade is that English is half a year out from his hip surgery. Still, he’s playing great and this is not a four-day grind.

Nelly Korda / Denny McCarthy +3300

Granted, this is a longshot according to oddsmakers. But the combination of Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy is an interesting one. Korda is an eight-time winner on the LPGA TOUR and is currently sitting at No. 2 in the Rolex rankings. She’s long off the tee and plays well with her second shot – avoids a lot of mistakes. McCarthy is also accurate off the tee and is wicked good with his putter when he gets going. This might be the “scrambling” duo to watch! And, a huge plus for both Korda and Lexi Thompson is that they just played this course a few weeks ago.

Others: One team that keeps making me take second looks is Corey Conners and K.H. Lee (+700) who were Presidents Cup teammates. Conners is an amazing all-around player who plays well at this event and K.H. Lee is developing into a confident player who can pop and win any given event. This is a nice combination.
