What a difference a few months make! Many were unsure if the racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway would be exciting after the repave and reconfiguration. That was when we were heading into the spring race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Now we know that the new Atlanta track may offer up some of the most exciting racing of the season! Just in time for the Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart.
Atlanta used to be known for high speeds, tire wear, and white knuckle driving due to the worn track surface. It was fun for drivers but boring for race fans. Now, after the race earlier this season in Atlanta, we know the track races like a superspeedway complete with drafting, pack racing, and tandem passing.
That’s fun to talk about, but what does it do when picking favorites? After all, the stats for the new surface only pull from one race which was a pleasant surprise for drivers, teams, and spectators. It means that the 2022 Quaker State 400 is as close to a pick ‘em event as you can get. There are too many favorites to cover!
Essentially, there are nine drivers topping the favorites list this week according to oddsmakers.
Chase Elliott +1000
Ryan Blaney +1000
Ross Chastain +1000
Denny Hamlin +1200
William Byron +1200
Joey Logano +1200
Kyle Busch +1200
Kyle Larson +1200
Darrell Wallace Jr. +1200
It’s kind of obvious that oddsmakers are looking at this race as being similar to something you would see during a Talladega, Daytona, or even Pocono race weekend. The new NextGen car has certainly leveled the playing field somewhat and now they have to factor in a reconfigured Atlanta track that has a whole bunch more passing than in seasons past.
Every driver listed above has won a race this season except for Ryan Blaney and Bubba Wallace. And, all three manufacturers are represented with the above list of drivers. William Byron won the spring race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this season.

2022 Quaker State 400 Predictions
Ross Chastain +1000
Ross Chastain has been a pleasant surprise this season as he has won twice for Trackhouse Racing. He’s also racked up five top-five finishes and logged twelve runs of 10th or better in 2022. He finished in the second spot earlier this year at Atlanta after starting in the 7th spot. He also led 45 laps during that race and was one of the drivers that seemed to understand the new layout quickly. Before Trackhouse racing, his best finish at the ATL was a 14th place run in 2021.
William Byron +1200
William Byron won the Folds of Honor 500 earlier this season. It was the first race on the new surface and reconfigured look of Atlanta Motor Speedway. Even with the increased amount of passing on the track during that race, Byron still managed to be the leader for 111 laps. He was the strongest car in the field and the best driver for Hendrick Motorsports. Byron has won at least one race every year over the last three seasons and has won twice in 2022.
Kurt Busch +2000
Kurt Busch is the defending Quaker State 400 winner last season but that came before the track was reconfigured. He has a win this season and a bunch of top ten finishes at Atlanta. Busch is with a new team this season and jumped from Chevrolet to Toyota with 23Xl Racing. He’s now teammates with Bubba Wallace. So far this season, Busch finished third here in the spring race and was the race leader for only 4 laps.
Others to Consider: I like Kyle Larson (+1200) as he has looked strong at Atlanta in the past. But his DNFs this year are of concern. The good news is that he finished 4th two weeks ago in Nashville and 2 nd last week at Road America. Yes, Kevin Harvick (+2800) has not been the Harvick of old over the last two seasons. But according to NASCAR Fantasy stats, he is the top driver at Atlanta. Maybe he can get back to his winning ways this Sunday.
