2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic Odds and Picks

There is a different look for the Rocket Mortgage Classic (RMC) this season. Bryson DeChambeau came back from the COVID break in 2019 and won this tournament. Then he came into the 2021 RMC as the favorite with Patrick Reed next on the odds list. DeChambeau missed the cut and Reed finished T32.

Cam Davis beat them both for the 2021 win and now neither is playing golf on the PGA Tour. This year Davis will defend his title against a strong field that includes last week’s winner Tony Finau. Davis comes into the event at +2800 following his 6th place finish at the Barracuda and a T16 at the 3M Open. Finau comes into Thursday’s opening round at +1200 fresh off his comeback win this past Sunday.

The course for the RMC is listed as a composite course. For the PGA, there are 17 holes used from the facilities North Course and one additional hole from the South Course. Look for players to go long off the tee to avoid well-placed fairway bunkers and the usual efforts to trim stroke on the par-5 holes.

The par-three holes are some of the tougher holes on the course with one having a blind green approach. The greens are small overall with some featuring sloping false fronts with several being elevated.

Like other Don Ross links, great tee shots are rewarded! If a player misses the fairway then you can expect some additional scrambling work to be done.

2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions

Will Zalatoris +1400

Will Zalatoris is waiting for his first win on the PGA Tour. He’s come close including his near miss at the PGA Championship and T2 at the U.S. Open. Currently, Zalatoris is ranked No. 13 on the OWGR and 9th in FedEx points. He’s carded eight top-ten finishes this season with 14 of 21 tournaments where he placed 28th or better. Zalatoris want to get rid of the label of being the best golfer to have never won a tournament.

Cameron Young +1800

Cameron Young has jumped into the PGA by taking on a very full schedule of 21 tournaments so far this season. He’s also had an impressive last seven outings! If you toss away two missed cuts, he’s finished no worse than T3 four times. He was T3 at the PGA Championship, T60 at the Memorial, and played only Thursday and Friday at the U.S. and Scottish Opens. He followed that with a 2nd placed finish at the Old Course.

Keegan Bradley +4000

Keegan Bradley did not play the best golf of his career during the Scottish Open or the Open at the Old Course but you have to respect his play at the Detroit Country Club. He’s never missed a cut at the RMC and finished T14 at this event last season. He was T7 at the U.S. Open and should be able to put the Scottish swing behind him.

Others: Patrick Cantlay (+1000) should be an option for me… but, as of late, he seems like he’s always one round – or approach shot – away from grabbing another win this season. He was T4 at the Scottish Open and T8 at the Open. Sahith Theegala (+4000) is probably my sleeper this week. The California native missed the cut at the 3M Open but was T2 at the Travelers. He was T34 at the Open following a round of 74 on Saturday. He went 69 and 68 on Thursday and Friday on the Old Course.
