Talk about an exciting past week for golf fans! Team USA beat the International team during last week’s Presidents Cup in a contest that some may consider as being closer than expected. Now the PGA TOUR schedule picks back up with the 2022 edition of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson Mississippi.

One of the members of Team USA, Sam Burns, comes back to defend his title as champion as he won this event last season. Burns is also the lone favorite with Sahith Theegala the closest player to Burns on the odds list. Burns is at +900 while Theegala comes in at +1800. The ever- smiling Theegala probably is hoping to build on how he performed here last season.

The California native and Pepperdine alum was co-leader, or close, for much of the tournament. Then he finished T8 after his opening rounds of 64, 67, and 67 were carded but finished out with a 71 on Sunday.

The stakes have risen since the Sanderson Farms Championship is a full-schedule event and not an alternate. The winner gets 500 FedEx Cup points instead of 300 and all of the benefits of a PGA Tour win including an automatic trip to the Masters. Also, the total purse for this event continues to grow! There is a very slight chance that inclement weather could be in the making depending on the path Hurricane Ian takes. For now, the forecast is pleasant and sunny with lows in the mid-50s for the morning rounds and low 80s towards the afternoon. The Country Club of Jackson plays like a traditional southern classic.

The roughs are 2.5 inches with a tight secondary cut. Greens are Bermuda, average 6200 SF, with several tiered. Bunkers are not as tricky as those at Quail Hollow last week but will still come into play as there are 56 on the course. Water comes into play on 5 holes with 7 water features total.

Sahith Theegala +1800

Sahith Theegala is no longer a hidden secret in the form of an unknown rookie. Theegala is now a known factor on the PGA TOUR. The Orange California native and Pepperdine Alum finished T5 two weeks ago at the Fortinet. Last season he played solid golf that included 11 top 25 finishes and five inside the top ten. This is a perfect field for him to make a showing.

Denny McCarthy +2200

Denny McCarthy plays fantastic golf at the Country Club of Jackson. Since 2018, he’s carded scores of T7, T18, T6, and T17. He was only one stroke off the lead heading into Sunday during last year’s Sanderson Farms. He was a bit inconsistent at the Fortinet but still pulled off a T25 finish.

Harris English +4000

Harris English is still returning slowly after surgery on his hip last year. He was blistering hot before the injury sidelined him. English was T6 on his last visit here but this is his first time back in three years. English started the season off well with a T9 at the Fortinet showing some of the forms he had during the 2020-2021 season that included him logging two wins and 12 top 25 finishes.

Others to Consider: Of course, I like Sam Burns (+1200) this week but he’s coming off a week at the Presidents Cup where he didn’t win a single match. Plus, the entire event was an emotional one and a grinder. He may be mentally tired and physically as well. Brendan Steele (+6600) has won this tournament twice in his career.
