This year the Genesis Scottish Open is a joint venture for both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. The event is held the same weekend as the Barbasol Championship. Both events are the final chance for players to warm up for the Open Championship next week. And there are final slots for the Open on the line as well.

The Renaissance Club is a new course when considering golf in Scotland. It opened in 2005 and has been the home to the Scottish Open for the last three years. It’s a true links course in the style of traditional venues on the DP World Tour. The course is target golf at its best – rolling fairways, deep rough, few trees to speak of, and deep secondary rough of native grasses. If you didn’t know that it was a relatively new course you would think it was as old as St. Andrews.

The greens are bigger than older courses of this type but they follow the same design style. There are plenty of runoffs and tiered areas that could cause a misplaced approach shop to run off the green. Pin placement is always a challenge here which will test short iron play and putting skills.

Jon Rahm is a classic target golf type of player who also carries a big stick. He’s at the top of the stats with his driver and he’s 2nd when it comes to greens in regulation. That’s a key number when playing a course such as the Renaissance Club. Rahm last won at the Mexico Open and carded a 2nd place finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Will Zalatoris +2800

Will Zalatoris is one of the best players on Tour from Tee to Green. He’s looking for a solid outing at the Scottish Open to take away some of the sting from his loss to Matt Fitzpatrick at the U.S. Open. Zalatoris is now 9th in FedEx points and No. 13 on the OWGR. This is his first outing since his T2 at the U.S. Open.

Tommy Fleetwood +4000

Tommy Fleetwood has played well at the Renaissance Club. He lost in a playoff here in 2020 and was only a few putts away from a top-25 finish at last year’s Scottish Open finishing T26. Fleetwood can be a tough player to beat when he has his short game going. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open but finished T2 at the PGA Championship.

Others: Sam Burns (+2800) has won three times this season and should never be looked over. I would just like to see how he plays on this type of golf course. Luke List (+12500) has one win this season and he can zero in on a short game and tricky green. His downfall is that his putter can get the yips from week to week.
