The famed island green of TPC Sawgrass is back as the 2022 version of THE PLAYERS Championship is next up on the PGA schedule. This week brings one of the toughest fields of the season. But, two big names have withdrawn from the event. Bryson DeChambeau and Kevin Na have both bowed out leaving a tight leaderboard with Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa coming in as co-favorites at +1200.
DeChambeau has been fighting an injury to his hand which has kept him out of a few events while forcing him to pull out early from others. As for Na, he and his wife are expecting child No. 3 so he’s got more important things this week!
The odds list is pretty tight behind Rahm and Morikawa as it includes two players that have won THE PLAYERS the last two times. That’s Justin Thomas who won last season and then Rory McIlroy who took the title in 2019.
The 2020 version was canceled due to COVID-19. And, a bit further down the list is Scottie Scheffler who is coming off his one-stroke victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week.
Here are the top-five favorites through +1800 to win THE PLAYERS Championship outright:
Jon Rahm +1200
Collin Morikawa +1200
Justin Thomas +1400
Rory McIlroy +1800
Viktor Hovland +1800
2022 THE PLAYERS Championship Preview

When: March 10 –13, 2022
Purse: $20 Million.
TV Coverage: NBC
TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is one of Florida’s premier courses and its Island green is well known to all PGA fans. TPC Sawgrass will not be as difficult as Bay Hill was last week when it comes to wind and the rough, but there will be some gusts blowing and a chance for wet weather.
Sawgrass is often considered one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. It features narrow fairways, water hazards everywhere, including additional marshes, and bunkers placed around every landing area. There’s not a lot of mercy giving to wayward approach shots.
And don’t forget the seagulls around the ponds and the famed Island green. That’s where Brad Fabel’s ball landed on the green, came to a rest, and then was grabbed by a seagull who flew off with it and then dropped it in the water.
2022 THE PLAYERS Championship Picks
Collin Morikawa +1200
Collin Morikawa had a rough time here last season as he finished T41. The good news is that it could have been worse. He carded a field low round of 66 to close things out. He last played at Riviera where he finished T2 and he was the lone 2nd place player at the ZOZO Championship. Morikawa leads the PGA in par-4 scoring which is a plus at Sawgrass.
Patrick Cantlay +2200
Patrick Cantlay has not had the best run at Sawgrass as he’s 2-4 on cuts and has never made the top-20 on his other two finishes. However, he’s coming in with a great game that seems to be hitting all of the clubs in his bag. So far this season he finished T4 at Pebble Beach, 4th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, and 2nd a few weeks ago at the Phoenix Open.
Will Zalatoris +4000
Will Zalatoris finished 21 st at his first PLAYERS Championship last year and showed that he could quickly adapt to the style of play needed to get around this course. Zalatoris has been working his short game hard and that will come in handy here as will his putter. He carded a 2nd place finish earlier this year at the Farmers.
Others I Like: Jon Rahm (+1200) has seemingly been the favorite for weeks heading into many events but he’s yet to back things up. And, he’s finished 10th or worse in four of his last five outings. Daniel Berger (+2800) let one get away from him a few weeks ago but he plays well at Sawgrass finishing T9 here last year.
