The U.S. Open is about to tee off in Brookline, Massachusetts following an exciting week of golf at the Canadian Open last week. This year’s event moves from Torry Pines across the country to The Country Club of Brookline. This is the first time the tournament has been held at one of the toughest courses in the nation since 1988.
This week’s favorite is last week’s winner of the Canadian Open and that’s Rory McIlroy at +1100. The No. 1 golfer in the world is Scottie Scheffler and he’s right next to Rory at +1200. Scheffler was the favorite last week but finished T18 while McIlroy went on to finish -19 which was 2-strokes better than Tony Finau (+3500).
Politics and your Picks
There are plenty of storylines this week aside from the fact that Brookline could be the toughest test players face all season. Tiger Woods has taken himself out of the field stating he needed some more healing time before the OPEN Championship – aka British Open.
Then there is also the fact that this event will include several players that defected to LIV Golf. Those players are now suspended from the PGA. But, the U.S. Open, as with the three other Majors, is not run by the PGA.
It will be interesting to see how LIV players react to PGA fans who may have an issue with their decision. This is due to the Saudi LIV Tour being considered a way for the Saudi government to try and whitewash its human rights record. And the fact that they are believed to be behind the murder of a famed journalist and have ties to the 9/11 attack.
Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, and others will face U.S. Open fans one week after the first LIV event. After DeChambeau and Johnson are both recent U.S. Open winners. Now that all of that is out of the way, here are the favorites through +1800 to win the 2022 U.S. Open outright.
Rory McIlroy +1100
Scottie Scheffler +1200
Justin Thomas +1400
Jon Rahm +1400
Cameron Smith +1800

This is not the same Brookline that Curtis Strange won the U.S. Open on in 1988 or where the U.S. Amateur was won by Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013. The course has undergone several changes including an overhaul in 2020. The hole sequencing has changed and they’ve brought back the Par. 3 No. 11 hole which has not been used in an Open since 1913.
Speaking of 1913, this is the course where Francis Ouimet and his caddy Eddie Lowery made history by winning the 1913 U.S. Open. That was the bases for the movie The Greatest Game Ever Played starring Shia LaBeouf.
The U.S.G.A is notorious for its course setup for the Open, the roughs may be closer to that of what was seen last week at the Canadian Open. Add that onto the fact that Brookline already has tight fairways and deceptively small greens.
2022 U.S. Open Predictions
Scottie Scheffler +1200
Scottie Scheffler looked a bit rough last week at the Canadian Open but he still finished inside the top 25. He’s leading the tour in FedEx points and has three wins on the season including this year’s Masters Tournament. Since the Masters, he’s had one cut, two 18th place finishes, and a 2nd place run at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler should make use of his short iron skills while seeking the small greens at Brookline.
Shane Lowry +3000
Shane Lowry was T3 at the Masters and the RBC Heritage. He finished 2 nd at the Honda Classic. He comes in 2nd in scrambling on the PGA TOUR. He’s also 3rd in bogey avoidance and is inside the 1op ten for adjusted scoring. Last week at the Canadian Open he finished T10 and stayed under 70 for all four rounds.
Tony Finau +3500
Tony Finau has been on the hunt for wins every week he’s played this season. He’s come agonizingly close several times including a sole 2nd place finish at the Canadian Open last week where he put on a show with his putter during the final round. Finau also finished T2 at the Mexico Open and T4 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He looks impressive coming into the U.S. Open and is now 15th on the OWGR.
Others I Like: I’m fading hard on any golfer from LIV. I think the fans will give them a hard time at the U.S. Open… at historic Brookline! My heart is telling me to look at both Rory McIlroy (+1100) and Justin Thomas (+1400) but the emotion after last week’s huge finish at the Canadian Open may be too much to overcome. That’s why my two dark horse picks are Corey Conners (+6600) due to his T4 at the Canadian Open and Harold Varner III (+9000) who shot a 3-under 67 last Sunday in Canada.
