Rory McIlroy has a great opportunity to grab a win this week at the 2022 edition of the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy comes in at +700 and is the heavy favorite at a tournament that has some curveballs mixed into the event. Instead of the familiar venue of Quail Hollow in North Carolina, this year’s Wells Fargo is taking place in Maryland at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.
Why the change? Quail Hollow is being groomed for the 2022 President’s Cup so TPC Potomac is filling in. The good news is that TPC Potomac is still a familiar venue to many players as it has been on the schedule before. It has hosted events steadily from 1987 to 2018.
Two recent Wells Fargo winners are somewhat close to McIlroy on the odds list. Max Homa won the event in 2019 and Jason Day took the title in 2018. Day comes in at +5000 while Homa rides in at +4000. The 2020 tournament was canceled to due COVID-19.
Another past winner is Rickie Fowler at +8000. Fowler won the 2012 tournament by beating both Rory McIlroy and D. A. Points in a Playoff. Speaking of which, there have been four playoff finishes at the Wells Fargo Championship in the last ten tournaments.
The Wells Fargo Championship has plenty of A-list players as usual so there should be no shortage of fighting for the top spot. But there is room for a surprise winner. After McIlroy, the odds begin to spread out quickly. It only takes seventeen players for the numbers to shoot from +700 to +4000.
Here are the top-five favorites to win the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship outright:
Rory McIlroy +700
Corey Conners +2000
Matt Fitzpatrick +2000
Tony Finau +2200
Tyrrell Hatton +2800
2022 Wells Fargo Championship Preview
Where: Potomac, Maryland
Course: TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm
Format: Stroke Play
Par: 70
Length: 7,107
When: May 5 – 8, 2022
Purse: $9 Million.
TV Coverage: CBS/Golf

The change of venue may seem like it could open the door for some players. It’s a par 70 course at only 7,107 yards. One would think this could lead to some good scoring opportunities for longer hitters and birdie opportunities on the par-five holes. That may not happen as Potomac is designed for tough play.
Don’t let the par 70 and yardage fool you. This course is tough due to tight fairways, plenty of bunkers, targeted landing areas, and small greens. This course has proven to be a beast during summer months but the weather this week is still spring like with cool afternoon temps. That should take some of the sting out.
The key to winning the Wells Fargo Championship this season will be the old fashioned way – Greens in Regulation. Staying out of the 2.5 inch rough off the tee will be a great place to start. Hitting and staying on the small greens for a manageable putt will be the way to finish.
2022 Wells Fargo Championship Predictions
Rory McIlroy +700
Rory McIlroy has won the Wells Fargo Championship three times. The first came in 2010 followed by two more victories in 2015 and again last year. But those wins came at Quail Hollow. But McIlroy still comes in as the defending champ and as the top golfer in the field. He enters the event with some rest after scoring second a few weeks ago at the Masters. Remember McIlroy’s hole-out from the bunker to close out his Sunday Masters round? If he plays that comfortably again this week he could repeat those moves here.
Gary Woodland +3000
Gary Woodland has been on a nice roll the last several weeks. He’s had five top-25 finishes in his last seven outings. Last week he finished T24 to keep those numbers going. Woodland could use his putter to take advantage of the small, yet rolling, Bentgrass greens. This is a course that demands good wedge and approach shots and Woodland has that part of his game tuned in as of late.
Anirban Lahiri +7000
Anirban Lahiri is becoming a fan favorite due to his deadpan style of play mixed with a fan- friendly sense of humor. The player from India who speaks three languages and grew up as an Army brat moved to No. 85 in the OWGR and is 55th in FedEx points. He finished 2nd at the PLAYERS and was T15 at the Mexico Open. Lahiri finished T13 here in 2018.
Others I Like: Tony Finau (+2200) is a player that could win this event hands down but I’ve faded on him over the last few weeks due to some inconsistent play. Luke List (+9000) could have a wonderful weekend but what applies to Finau also applies to List. If he has the same hot putter that helped him win the Farmers earlier this year then he could be a player to keep an eye on.
