Can Will Zalatoris grab his first PGA Tour this weekend during the last regular season tournament? Maybe, but he’s going to have to beat a tough field that includes Shane Lowry. The two players come in as co-favorites at +1600 to win the 2022 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.

The good news for both favorites is that Tony Finau, who has won the last two events, is taking some time off before the Playoffs and the FedEx Championship. It’s also good news for Kevin Kinser who is looking to defend his Wyndham title from last season.

But Kinser (+3300) has three of the five players he had to beat in a six-man playoff last year for the win returning. Kinser went 15-under to finally put away Branden Grace, Si Woo Kim, Kevin Na, Adam Scott, and Roger Sloan. Returning are Scott, Sloan, and Kim who won this event in 2016.

Also in the field are Billy Horschel, Justin Rose, and 2019 Wyndham winner J.T. Poston who won here in 2019 and won the John Deere Classic earlier in the season. One player that may be making notes for the upcoming Presidents Cup is Davis Love III who has won the Wyndham Championship three times. He’s also the U.S. Captain so why not play and do some player scouting?

The Wyndham Championship has had low finishes of 20 or 21 under in five of the last six contests. This is an event where players are looking to pad FedEx points but it’s also an event with a field that’s loaded with possible winners.

2022 Wyndham Championship Preview

Where: Greensboro, North Carolina

Course: Sedgefield Country Club Ross Course

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 70

Length: 7,131

When: August 3-7, 2022

Purse: $7.5 Million.

The Ross Course at Sedgefield Country Club, designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1926, is a par 70 classic that has been known for low scoring. The last five of six events have finished either 21 or 22 under. The greens are Bermuda with many being elevated and undulated with slight terraces. Almost all are protected by front bunkers.

The first cut to the rough is playable and fairways are mostly straightforward with only a few harsh doglegs. There are plenty of areas where a player can scramble to recover from a subpar tee shot or even a second shot landing in the rough.

2022 Wyndham Championship Predictions

Shane Lowry +1600

Shane Lowry has played some fantastic rounds of late making the cut in 11 of his last 12 events. That includes four with top-three finishes. He now ranks 11th on Tour in Strokes Gained on approach which is perfect for a course such as Sedgefield. This will be his 5th time on this course where he now has a scoring average (14 rounds) of 67.36.

Billy Horschel has a win this season, a slew of top-ten runs, and only three cuts this year. Horschel enters the Wyndham opening round with a five of five record at Sedgefield. That record includes a 2nd place finish and four cards of 11th or better. The Florida Gator alum is 18th in the FedEx and 11th on the OWGR.

Keith Mitchell has not won on the Tour since 2018 but he’s pumped up some numbers this season. Mitchell has moved to 55 on the OWGR and broke into the top-40 in FedEx points – now ranked 38th. The Chattanooga native missed the cut at the Open on the Old Course but was T6 at the Travelers and T7 at the Canadian Open before that.

Others: For some reason, I’m getting the feeling that Will Zalatoris (+1600) is having a tougher time getting over his T2 at the U.S. Open. He followed up with a missed cut, a T28, and a T20. This may be the week he pulls it all together but he can’t get sidetracked. Is Harris English (+10000) healthy? It looks like he is! His hip surgery and sore back may be healed. A healthy Harris English is a threat – especially when his short game and putter are producing.
