Time for some Team Golf! the Zurich Classic of New Orleans is next up and it’s a two-man team stroke play event. It was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 but came back last season with Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith taking the playoff win over Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.
Many golf fans see this event as almost an “everyman” version of the Ryder Cup. It combines two-man teams with many of the tournament formats weekend golfers play. The event is split between the fourball format and an alternate shot format. The field consists of 80 two-man teams taking on TPC Louisiana with a team stroke play format. The weekend cut is set for the first 30 teams plus ties.
Granted, you won’t see all of the big names you are accustomed to on a PGA weekend but there are always plenty of strong teams in the event starting with favorites Viktor Hovland and teammate Colin Morikawa who come in as the lone favorites at +750 heading into Thursdays opening round.
Here are the top-five favorite teams to win the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans outright. The winning players get two-year exemptions and 400 FedEx points but not a Masters invite or World Ranking points.
Hovland/Morikawa +750
Cantlay/Schauffele +800
Leishman/Smith +900
Palmer/Scheffler +1000
Burns/Horschel +1200
2022 Zurich Classic Preview

Where: Avondale, Louisiana
Course: TPC Louisiana
Format: Team Stroke Play
Par: 72
Length: 7,425
When: April 21-24, 2022
Purse: $7.5 Million.
TV Coverage: CBS/Golf
TPC Louisiana looks long on paper but that doesn’t mean the heavy hitters in the field are going to start blasting drives off the tee just for show. First, the fairways and landing zones won’t allow that. Secondly, the alternate and best ball format will dictate how each team approaches a hole.
Sure, there will be a few instances where a team goes for the long drive gold but don’t expect it every time. An emphasis will be on second shots and putting. Reading greens will be an important skill this weekend. Most greens here have plenty of high and low areas with drop-off sides and terraced fronts.
2022 Zurich Classic Predictions
Cantlay/Schauffele +800
I’m stuck on Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele! The two players have styles that complement each other and they are frequent practice buddies. Last year as a team these two players finished T11 and probably should have finished much better. That’s hard to do when the leaders don’t blink. Cantlay finished in 2nd last week at the RBC Heritage while Schauffle best finish this year was 3 rd at the Phoenix Open.
Palmer/Scheffler +1000
I’m not sure why the team of Ryan Palmer and Scottie Scheffler are not considered the favorites this week. It must be that oddsmakers are waiting for Scheffler to have a horrible outing. Ryan Palmer teamed up with Jon Rahm to win this event in 2019 and his overall game from tee to cup is a perfect fit for Scheffler’s hot bag. And, in case you missed it, Scheffler has won five events this season including the Ryder Cup and the Masters. He also clicked off a win at the WGC-Dell Match Play in late March.
Bradley/Steele +3000
Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele missed the cut here in 2017 but finished T4 last season with some strong holes on Saturday and Sunday. The two players are good friends and know each other’s game. Steele started the season strong with some great finishes including a T2 at the ZOZO Championship. Then he hit a patch of missed cuts but has looked better his last three outings including a T13 at the PLAYERS. Bradley finished T8 a few weeks ago at the Valero Open and was 5th at the PLAYERS.
Others I Like: I do like the pairing of Hovland/Morikawa but I just think there are some better value choices further down the list. The team of Keith Mitchell and Brandt Snedeker (+5500) is worth a look. They’ve played as a team before and both know this course well.
