2023 Genesis Invitational Odds and Picks

The 2023 Genesis Invitational is teeing up this week with more prestige than ever. The event has been declared as one of the PGA Tour’s new elevated events, which pushed the purse from around $9 million to $20 million. That means more big names are in the field and 550 FedEx points are up for grabs. Plus, Tiger Woods is playing his first non-major event since the Zozo Championship in 2020.

Once again the Genesis will be attracting a strong field, now even stronger. The event will instantly have a larger audience now that Woods has announced his participation. That does not mean that Woods enters as a favorite to win the 2023 Genesis Invitational.

Woods comes in at +10000, which is far off the pace of Jon Rahm who tops the field at +700. Rahm comes in as the lone favorite with Rory McIlroy close at +900. Rahm was part of the mix last week at the WM Phoenix Open, as he was in striking distance of the leader, Scottie Scheffler, down the stretch on Sunday. McIlroy made the cut, but finished on Sunday by carding a tough 70.

Speaking of Scottie Scheffler, he went on to win the Phoenix Open for the second time in a row. That means that the favorites to win outright this week looks amazingly similar to the same list for last week’s Phoenix Open.

Here are the favorites to win the 2023 Genesis Invitational outright:

Jon Rahm +700

Rory McIlroy +900

Scottie Scheffler +1000

Justin Thomas +1400

Xander Schauffele +1600

Tony Finau +1600

There is not a defending champ this week at the Genesis Invitational as Joaquin Niemann, who won last season by going all four rounds as the leader, is no longer playing on the PGA Tour.

2023 Genesis Invitational Preview

Where: Pacific Palisades, California

Course: Riviera Country Club

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 71

Length: 7322 Yards

When: February 16 –19, 2023

Purse: $20 Million.

TV Coverage: CBS, Golf Channel, ESPN+ and Peacock

This is a venue that forces players to dig into their bags for the right clubs. The Riviera Country Club does not have any “gimmie” holes! If you doubt this, consider the fact that Tiger Woods has never won here and he has carded over 80 wins so far.

Trees and bunkers protect greens and the terrain is steep in places – which will be interesting to see how Woods handles four days of walking up and down several hills. This could be his test on how he holds up for the Masters, as Augusta National is on hilly terrain which does not show up well on TV.

Many of the greens are raised which always forces players to have command of their short game. Wedge play will be a needed strength this week as well as strong putters. Many of the greens have fall-away areas which could cause some awkward rolls past the hole if a putt is read wrong. The same can happen with choosing the wrong club on long approach shots.

2023 Genesis Invitational Predictions

Tony Finau +1600

Tony Finau has an amazing short game and putter. That’s a huge plus on the greens at the Riv. Finau is currently 4th in putting birdies or better on the PGA Tour and ranked 10th in avoiding dreaded bogies. Finau has been strong so far this season following an even better showing last season. He was part of the winning Presidents Cup team, won at Houston and has carded only one cut so far this year. In his other six starts so far he has a win and has not finished worse than T16.

Max Homa +1800

Max Homa has already won twice this season by taking the Fortinet and Farmers a few weeks ago. That gives him six victories on the PGA Tour since he went pro in 2013. Plus, he won here in 2021 by beating non-other than Tony Finau in a playoff. He has made the cut in all of the events he has played in this season with his worst finish being a T23 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina. He also has great putting right now as he is 1st on Tour with consecutive par-3 birdies (4) and is 2nd on Tour in scrambling at 81% (10-20 yards from the green).

Patrick Cantlay +2500

Patrick Cantlay plays good golf at the Riv. He has gone five-for-five here since 2018 with five T20s including carding a T4. Cantlay is now ranked 5th on the OWGR and 46th in FedEx points. He was part of the winning Presidents Cup team and followed that up with a T2 at the Shriners Children’s Open. Also, Cantlay may have a chip on his shoulder as he is probably looking to erase a bad outing last week at the WM Phoenix Open where he failed to make the weekend.

Others: Scottie Scheffler (+1000) defended his WM Phoenix Open win from last season by holding off Nick Taylor and Jon Rahm for the win last week. Going back-to-back on the PGA TOUR is tough, though. Viktor Hovland (+2500) did not have the best outing last week with a T42 at the WM Phoenix Open, but he plays great at the Riv as he carded a T4 here last season and a T5 in 2021.
