One year ago Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka battled till the end for the 2023 Honda Classic title. It was Straka who won by one stroke for the win by going 19-under and 270 overall. This season the Honda Classic comes after a dramatic return to the game by Tiger Woods and the excitement of an elevated PGA Tour event with a huge purse.
Now it’s back to reality with the Honda Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Florida and a smaller purse than last week. But the field is packed with value and a strong group of favorites. Sungjae Im comes in at +800 as the lone favorite to win outright. He won this event in 2020. His closest competition on the leaderboard is Lowry who comes in as the only player at +1200.
As for the defending Honda Classic Champion, Straka comes in well behind the favorites to win outright at +4000. The good news for his fans is that there are a bunch of quality players ranging from +2200 through +4000 and beyond.
Here are the favorites through to win the 2022 Honda Classic outright:
Sungjae Im +800
Shane Lowry +1200
Matt Kuchar +2200
Min Woo Lee +2200
Alex Noren +2200
Chris Kirk +2200
As you can see there are several players bunched together at +2200 including Matt Kuchar who is returning to PGA National for the first time in several years. He does have some great history here as he’s never missed the weekend out of four visits.
2023 Honda Classic Preview

There have been some changes at the PGA National Champion Course mostly dealing with some of the bunkers. There is some debate if the changes will come into play or will be regulated as being simply cosmetic. We will know down the stretch on the weekend.
The Par 70 course can be brutal at times especially if the wind is blowing which could be the case in Palm Beach this week. That being said, the course is always stunning to view and short enough for the big hitters on the Tour to lay back a bit. This is a second-shot course that forces players to be precise off the tee to hit landing areas while staying away from well-placed bunkers.
PGA National is also the home of the “Bear Trap” which is considered among the toughest three-hole stretch on the PGA Tour. It consists of holes 15, 16, and 17. Players will have to navigate lots of water and some of the aforementioned stretch of bunkers.
2023 Honda Classic Predictions
Sungjae Im +800
Sungjae Im won this event in 2020 by going 6-under and beating hard-charging Mackenzie Hughes by one stroke. Im finished T8 in his Honda Classic title defense last season but is coming off a rough outing at the Genesis where he carded a T56. However, before that, he finished T6 at the Phoenix Open and T4 at the Farmers. in 2021 but he’s playing better golf as of late. He is now ranked 28th in FedEx points and No. 18 on the OWGR list. If Im has his putter and wedges going he’ll be hard to beat.
Chris Kirk +2200
Chris Kirk has been a regular at PGA National since he hit the PGA Tour in 2011 after a few years in what is now the Korn Ferry. Last year he played great and was able to scramble around some of the tricky areas around the course. That short game helped him card a T7 here last season. So far this year the same skill around the greens has helped him finish 3rd twice this season. He’s missed the cut three times this season but seems to show well at the Honda Classic.
Harris English +3300
Harris English is looking like he’s just about fully recovered from his injuries which held him out for a few months last season. He carded a strong T12 last week at the Genesis Invitational which could have been better except for a few missed fairways. He finished inside the top 20 at the Honda Classic in both 2019 and 2020. He had a string of missed cuts before the Genesis but has a strong T3 at the QBE Shootout. If English continues to remain healthy and his poker-face putter is on point then he should be in the mix on Sunday.
Others I Like: Let’s look at the two players who took it to the last hole at the Honda Classic last year Shane Lowry (+1200) almost won here last season and he’s never missed the weekend at PGA National. Sepp Straka (+4000) pushed ahead of Lowry for the win last year and he’s shown signs of being strong once again in 2023. Both of these two players can carve up approaches and greens when they get things rolling.
