Week 2 of the 2023 Major League Soccer season gets underway this Saturday, March 4th, with LAFC hosting the Portland Timbers in the early kick-off. If you’re planning to wager on Week 2, be sure to check out my MLS predictions below.
Atlanta United vs. Toronto FC Picks
Best Bet: Atlanta United to Win (-167)
Atlanta United came from behind to snatch a dramatic late victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on the opening weekend, with Thiago Almada bagging a stoppage-time brace. Meanwhile, the Five Stripes racked up 61% possession and 20 shots at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
By contrast, Toronto FC threw away a 2-1 lead to suffer a 3-2 defeat at the hands of DC United, while key player Lorenzo Insigne picked up an injury. Following last weekend’s disappointing loss, I can see Toronto suffering another defeat against Atlanta.
Columbus Crew vs. DC United Picks
Best Bet: Over 2.5 Goals (-138)
As I already mentioned, DC United came from behind to beat TFC 3-2 last time out. Next up, Wayne Rooney’s men face the Columbus Crew, who were thrashed 4-1 by the Philadelphia Union in Week 1, despite taking the lead at Subaru Park.
Since Columbus and DC were both involved in five-goal thrillers last weekend, I can see them combining for over 2.5 goals at Lower.com Field. The Crew are favored to win the match, but the over 2.5 goals wager offer greater betting value.
Inter Miami vs. Philadelphia Union Picks
Best Bet: Philadelphia Union to Win (+110)
The Philadelphia Union picked up where they left off last year, notching a 4-1 victory over Columbus in their season opener. Needless to say, the 2022 Eastern Conference champions look destined to enjoy another successful campaign.
Granted, Inter Miami also claimed a decent win last weekend – beating CF Montreal 2-0 – but the Herons will struggle to replicate that result against Philly. In my eyes, odds of +110 for the Union to claim all three points are definitely worth taking advantage of.
St. Louis City vs. Charlotte FC Picks
Best Bet: Both Teams to Score (-160)
This match-up brings together Major League Soccer’s youngest clubs, as debutants St. Louis City and second-year side Charlotte FC clash in Missouri. With that in mind, I expect the newcomers to dish up an eventful encounter at CITYPARK.
St. Louis opened their account with an impressive 3-2 victory over Austin FC last weekend, while Charlotte suffered a 1-0 defeat to the New England Revolution. If St. Louis’ opening game is anything to go by, the BTTS wager should prove to be a shrewd pick.
Seattle Sounders vs. Real Salt Lake Picks
Best Bet: Seattle Sounders to Win (-130)
The Seattle Sounders kicked off their 2023 campaign with a thumping 4-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids, with Jordan Morris bagging a brace. Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake came from behind to rescue a 2-1 win against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
It is no secret that the Sounders endured a difficult 2022 season, but we shouldn’t forget that they have reached four of the previous seven MLS Cup finals – triumphing in 2016 and 2019. I’m confident that Seattle will bounce back this year, so I’m backing them to beat RSL.
