2023 The American Express Odds and Picks

The Hawaii PGA TOUR swing is over after some thrilling endings. Now It’s time for more drama, as The American Express is set to tee up! This is the event made famous by Bob Hope and his famous Hollywood friends. It features a three-course format and as always, the field for this tournament is a nice mix of solid big-name players, as well as value picks down the odds list.

As mentioned above, the event takes place on three courses in La Quinta, California. The courses are the La Quinta Country Club, the PGA West Stadium Course and the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course. Players rotate on the three courses with the final round returning at The Stadium Course.

Hudson Swafford will not be in the mix as the defending American Express champion, as he has moved from the PGA TOUR to LIV exhibition events. That opens the door for another winner of this tournament, which is Jon Rahm who enters as the lone favorite this week at +650. He won this event in 2018 in a playoff against Andrew Landry. Then, Landry went on to win here in 2020.

Here are the top five favorites to win The American Express tournament outright:

Jon Rahm +650

Patrick Cantlay +1000

Scottie Scheffler +1000

Tony Finau +1200

Will Zalatoris +1800

The tournament had a reputation for ending in a playoff as it has for 3 of the last 10 times. However, a playoff has not happened in the last four years. This is not a tournament that sees one player dominate the field by a bunch of strokes. The last time that happened was when Tom Kite won by 6 strokes over the field back in 1993.

2023 The American Express Predictions

Jon Rahm +650

Jon Rahm won here in 2018 and has been in the mix at this event several times. Rahm has been playing incredible golf recently as he has two wins and three additional finishes of T4 or better in his last five starts worldwide. That’s impressive and may be an indicator that playing on several courses should not be an issue for him – it has not been in the past. He’s the hottest golfer in the field this week with a No. 4 ranking by the OWGR and No. 4 in FedEx points.

Scottie Scheffler +1000

Scottie Scheffler is playing great golf as always. Last season at this time golf fans were waiting for him to grab his first PGA TOUR victory. It happened – he won four times last season and held the No. 1 spot in the world for a long time. He has not slipped much as he’s now in the No. 2 OWGR spot. He was T7 at the Tournament of Champions, 2nd at the Hero World Challenge, T9 at the Houston Open and T3 at Mayakoba.

Tom Hoge +4000

Tom Hoge should have had enough time to put the TCU defeat at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs at the National Championship behind him. He finished T6 here in 2020 and 2nd last season behind Swafford. Hoge had a rough Sony Open with a T41, but he has finished T13th or better in six of his nine outings this season. He was T3 at the TOC two weeks ago.

Others: Will Zalatoris (+1800) is coming off his back issue, but did finish T11 at his first event back from his time off. Rickie Fowler (+6600) continues to work his way back and a three-course challenge will be a great gauge of his overall game.
