Time to fill out your bracket! Not the NCAA basketball Championships – but the 2023 World Golf Championship (WGC) Dell Technologies Match Play event at the Austin Country Club! It’s a limited field event broken into 16 groups of four players, with seeding, battling it out for the win.

Wait, there’s more! If you’re not into the match-play format then there is also the Corales Puntacana Championship on the PGA schedule in the Dominican Republic. But, the highest- ranked golfers in the world playing this week will be in Austin Texas at the WGC Dell. And, a familiar favorite is at the top of the odds list in the form of Scottie Scheffler at +800.

Last Year John Rahm was the favored player and he returns at +1100 followed by Rory McIlroy who comes in at +1200. There are only 64 players in the field so the numbers are tight this week.

Here are the favorites to win the tournament:

Scottie Scheffler +800

Jon Rahm +1100

Collin Morikawa +2000

Max Homa +2000

Any one of the players in this field has the skills to win this week. Remember, this is a limited field this week of top players that are not taking a week or two off before the rapidly approaching Masters. And, this is match play with groupings – listed below. So, before making your picks overall you need to see what players are grouped in the brackets. Also, on a side note, this is the last time this event will be held but that’s a different topic.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Preview

Where: Austin, Texas

Course: Austin Country Club

Format: Match Play

When: March 22–26 2023

The Austin Country Club course was designed by Pete Dye and plays as two distinct links of nine. Half of the course is rolling and plays around elevated terraces and hills while the other nine holes play mostly along the bottom land near the river bed. Also, the overall course has not changed much since the removal of a whole bunch of trees following ice storms. But players are now familiar with this. Weather will include wind, rain showers, and high temps in the 80s.

2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Predictions

Scottie Scheffler +800

Scottie Scheffler is coming in hot! He’s the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is coming off a win at THE PLAYERS Championship, and is the defending winner of this tournament. He’s also already logged another win when he defended at the WM Phoenix Open. Scheffler seems to have all of the clubs in his bag dialed in and has not shown too many weaknesses in his game. Schefler should make it through the brackets.

Tyrrell Hatton +2800

Tyrrell Hatton has been in this event before and has hit the ground running three times in this event in the past only to be eliminated after the opening rounds. Hatton seems to be stringing some great outings into a streak. He finished T4 at Bay Hill at the Arnold Palmer and carded runner-up at TPC Sawgrass and THE PLAYERS Championship. Hatton is now 16th on the OWGR ranking list and 1st in approach from 225 to 250 yards which is a huge plus on this course. He’s the top seed in his group.

Tony Finau +2800

Tony Finau is the top seed in group 10 and should be able to move forward if he can get past Kurt Kitayama who is the 19th seed. Finau has a game that is custom-made for this course. He should be able to stay safe off the tee and have enough short iron game to bring his solid putter into play. Scrambling around the fringe has always been a strong point for Finau and now he’s one of the top players in this stat category on the PGA TOUR.

Others I Like: My “others” this week are also slight fades. Jon Rahm (+1100) has had some strange up and downs over his last few events. Plus, he’s in a group with Rickie Fowler (+5500) who seems to be on the brink of returning to his winning form. As for Rory McIlroy (+1200), he’s always a possibility but I think he may need a vacation. He’s had a few missed cuts as of late.
