2023 WM Phoenix Open Odds and Picks

Are you ready for the WM Phoenix Open, which is often called the Peoples Open? It’s the rowdiest of the PGA Tour events during the season and it has now been proclaimed as being an elevated event. That means the purse jumped from around 9 million last year to 20 million! That’s drawing in big names, such as co-favorites Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy who both come in at +750.

That puts them ahead of Scottie Scheffler who is currently the No. 2 player in the world according to the OWGR. Scheffler enters the opening round at +1200. Rory is currently ranked as the No. 1 player in the world while Rahm is No. 3 and the ranked players in the field keep coming.

First, here are the favorites to win the 2023 WM Phoenix Open outright:

Jon Rahm +750

Rory McIlroy +750

Scottie Scheffler +1200

Xander Schauffele +1400

Patrick Cantlay +1800

Back to the world rankings mentioned above. Xander Schauffele is ranked No. 6, while Patrick Cantlay is ranked No. 5. So, what happened to the No. 4 player? That would be Cameron Smith and he’s now part of the LIV Golf exhibition tour so he’s not in the field. There are eight of the top ten players in the world teeing it up in Scottsdale this week.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Predictions

Rory McIlroy +750

Rory McIlroy comes into the event following his win on the DP World Tour two weeks ago and as the No. 1 ranked player on the OWGR. This is his first PGA Tour event since he won the CJ Cup back in October. McIlroy has been playing great golf while balancing the role he’s taken with being one of the public faces of the PGA against LIV Golf. It does not seem to have slowed him down.

Scottie Scheffler +1200

Scottie Scheffler enters the tournament as the defending champ. He defeated Patrick Cantlay last year at Scottsdale in a playoff. Speaking of playoffs, this event has ended in a playoff five of the last seven times. Scheffler seems to play this course well and should be able to take full advantage of his short iron and putter at TPC Scottsdale.

Max Homa +2000

Max Homa has made it to the weekend all four times he’s played here and that includes two T15 finishes. Homa is now sitting at No. 2 in FedEx points and moved to the No. 12 spot on the OWGR. He has already won twice this season with both the Farmers and the Fortinet Championship. He also carded a T3 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Others: Why am I not all-in on Jon Rahm (+750) this week? He just looked a bit off during his last PGA Tour outing. However, he’s playing on his college home turf, so he’ll be feeling the love from his Arizona State fans. Rickie Fowler (+5000) is showing flashes of his former playing level and seems to keep improving. He has come close to winning this event several times so he’s familiar with how this course plays.
