The 2023 World Chess Championship will run from April 7th to May 1st 2023.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Championship will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan. A new chess world champion will be crowned, as Magnus Carlsen won’t defend his title.
Carlsen has been world champion since 2013. He won the title by defeating Vishwanathan Anand and he went on to defend the title four times. He’d be favored if he was competing in this year’s match.
The last World Chess Championship was held in 2021. Carlsen defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi by a score of 7.5 to 3.5 (Carlsen had four wins, seven draws and zero losses during the match).
Nepomniachtchi will play Ding Liren in the 2023 World Chess Championship.
2023 World Chess Championship Betting Lines
Odds: Nepomniachtchi (-125) vs. Ding (+105)
Nepo is favored to win the 2023 World Chess Championship. Nepo is currently ranked #2 in the world and Ding is ranked #3 in the world. There isn’t much separating these two super grandmasters.
The winner of this match will be ranked #1 in the world.
There’s a €2 million prize fund. The winner will receive 60% and the loser will receive 40%.
2023 World Chess Championship Format
The format is the same as the 2021 World Chess Championship. The match will feature up to 14 games of classical chess. Once a player reaches 7.5 points, the match is over and that player wins. If the two players are tied at 7-7 after the 14 games, a series of rapid chess games will determine the winner.
You’ll be able to watch all of the games live online next month.
2023 World Chess Championship Preview
With Carlsen not defending his title, the winner and runner-up of the 2022 Candidates Tournament are going to square off to become world champion. Nepo won the tournament with an incredible score of 9.5 / 14 (highest score in tournament with current format). Ding finished 2nd with a score of 8 / 14.
Ding didn’t qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament, but after Sergey Karjakin was disqualified, Ding was named the replacement, as he had the highest rating out of players not already qualified.
These two have played 13 classic chess games against each other. Nepo won three of the games, Ding won two games and eight games were a draw. The most recent H2H game ended in a draw.
They played three H2H games in 2022 with two draws and Nepo winning once.
2023 World Chess Championship Predictions
These are two excellent chess players and this will be a close match. A lot of the games will be draws and both players will need to avoid making any blunders if they want to be world champion.
Nepo has been playing great. His score in the 2022 Candidates Tournament was record-breaking. He also had a small edge in the head-to-head series, including a win against Ding last year.
My prediction is Nepomniachtchi will win the 2023 World Chess Championship.
Best Bet: Nepomniachtchi to Win (-125)
