The Champions League semifinals will be played beginning April 27 when Real Madrid faces Chelsea. Manchester City travels to France to face Paris Saint-Germain the following day.

Real Madrid looks to recapture the Champions League title, something they have done more than any other club in history. Real has won 13 championships, the most recent in 2018 which capped off a run of three straight.

To get to this year’s final, Real will have to get past Chelsea. The Blues easily ran through the group stage as Frank Lampard conceded just two goals in six games. More recently, Chelsea beat Porto 2-0 then lost to Porto 1-0 in Seville but advanced on aggregate.

The Blues recently defeated Manchester City to reach the English FA Cup final, but they will go up against one of the more formidable midfield trio’s in Casemiro, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric. The Blues will also have to contend with Karim Benzema who has 58 goals in 109 European games for Real Madrid.

Real has faced Chelsea just twice in 2013 and 2016. Real won both matches. This Champions League semifinal will be the third.

Paris Saint-Germain is the underdog in their UCL semifinal matchup with Manchester City and for good reason. PSG is winless against Man City in European competition. In their only knockout tie meeting in European football, Man City eliminated PSG in the 2016 UCL quarterfinal.

PSG is just the third team from France to reach the semifinals of the Champions League in consecutive season. The club lost to Bayern Munich in last year’s final 1-0. If PSG reaches this year’s final, they would become just the ninth side to do so in consecutive years.

This is just the second trip to the UCL semifinals for Manchester City. They overcame their quarterfinal jinx to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in both legs.

While Man City has been guilty of some defensive lapses over the years, there is no question the defense is outstanding in 2021. During the group stage, Man City conceded just one goal in six games.

Each of Man City’s last four matches – two wins, two losses – have been decided by one goal. PSG has won three of its last four matches, scoring three or more goals in each victory. They will have a much harder time scoring against the Manchester City defense.

Man City lost Kevin De Bruyne to an ankle injury in their last match, a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the English Premier League. Whether or not he will return is unknown at this point, but the distractions of the Super League and the recent losses are just too much to overlook. Take PSG for upset playing at home.
