Friday is yet another loaded college basketball schedule as we are deep into conference tournament season. With Selection Sunday looming in just two days, the best of the best are left standing in their league championship tournaments, and there are some fantastic matchups to wager on.
Here are your best bets for the Friday slate.
Maryland Terrapins vs. Michigan Wolverines Picks
Maryland vs. Michigan Betting Report
Best Bet: Michigan (-8.5)
This line looks like an overreaction by bookmakers to Michigan’s recent “struggles.” The Wolverines were not highly regarded coming into the season but ran out to a 13-1 record before stumbling a little bit. Michigan now sits at 19-3 on the season and firmly in possession of a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament.
These two teams met twice in the regular season, with Michigan coming away victorious on both occasions. The Wolverines also won both games by double digits and averaged over 1.20 points per possession in each game.
Center Hunter Dickinson dominated the first matchup with 26 points and 11 rebounds, though he struggled in the second game.
The Terrapins were stumbling into the Big Ten tournament, losing to Northwestern and Penn State in consecutive games to close the season. They found their footing in their opening game of the tournament, defeating a surging Michigan State team by a score of 68-57 on Thursday.
The Wolverines are 18-3 on the season when they are the favorite, while Maryland has won four games on the season when it was receiving points.
The total, which is currently set at 133.5 points, may be a nice place to park your money as the Terrapins have gone under in each of their last five games, and the Wolverines have done the same in their last five contests.
If you are looking to bet the spread, take the Wolverines. Michigan more than likely feels like it has something to prove after really struggling against Michigan State and losing two of three to close the season. They should win this game by double-digits.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Virginia Cavaliers
Georgia Tech vs. Virginia Betting Report
Best Bet: Virginia (-2.5)
Sometimes watching the games really helps. These two teams played a couple of very close games during the regular season, and in both instances, Georgia Tech had a lead late in the game and eventually fumbled it away.
Virginia survived a close quarterfinal contest against the Syracuse Orange on a last-second triple by freshman guard Reece Beekman to move on to the semifinals. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets struggled mightily against the 13th-seeded Miami Hurricanes, who were playing their third game in three days with a short-handed roster.
Georgia Tech’s victory on Thursday was the Yellow Jackets’ first in the ACC tournament since 2016. While history really isn’t a tremendous indicator in such matters, there is a certain stigma that you just can’t trust Georgia Tech in big-time spots such as this.
The Yellow Jackets simply underwhelm historically on the big stage when everyone seems to be behind them. It happened to start the season when they were the talk of the town as far as dark horses go, and lost their first two games of the season to Georgia State and Mercer.
Meanwhile, Virginia is a well-coached team that plays tremendous defense while boasting one of the best offensive trios in the conference in Sam Hauser, Jay Huff, and Trey Murphy.
Look for the Cavaliers to put the clamps on ACC Player of the Year Moses Wright just as they did in both regular-season games and take their chances with Jose Alvarado and Michael Devoe beating them from the perimeter. This is a whole new world for the Yellow Jackets, while it’s old hat for Virginia. Look for the Cavaliers to cover here with the total safely under the 129 points.
