Jai alai is played with a ball thrown off the front wall of a three-walled court from a curved basket, the cesta, worn on the right hand. The game comes from the Basque country. If you want to know how to bet on jai alai today, the answer is the World Jai Alai League in Miami, which says it is an approved wagering market on DraftKings, FanDuel, Hard Rock Bet and BetRivers.
That changes what a jai alai bet is. The league plays a head-to-head format between two teams, so a bet is one side against the other. The pari-mutuel format of earlier eras is not part of this league.
How the World Jai Alai League works
The league has six franchises: the Chargers, Cyclones, Devils, Fireballs, Renegades and Warriors. Each carries six players. Season X runs from September 15 to December 11, 2026, with 45 gamedays on the calendar.
The ticketed games are Friday nights at 7:00 PM ET at JAM Arena, 3500 NW 37th Ave, Miami. The building is the original Miami fronton, opened as the Biscayne Fronton in January 1926 and reopened on February 13, 2026, with 1,500 seats. Tuesday to Thursday afternoon matches are private previews. Games stream on ESPN+, YouTube, Fubo and JaiAlai.tv.
Each gameday is five or six matches between the same two teams: up to three singles and up to six doubles. Players are ranked Division 1 to 5 in singles and meet the same division on the other team. The playoffs start December 4 and the championship is December 11.
Scoring, and what it means for a bet
A match is played in sets to six points. The first player or pair to win two sets wins the match. The court is 120 feet long under the league rules, and the ball must be caught on the fly or after one bounce and thrown back in one motion. Holding or juggling it loses the point.
Serving has two rules. The server gets a second serve only after an underserve or an overserve. The team that wins a point keeps the serve.
Each match won is one point for the team on that gameday. A gameday win is worth one point in the standings and a tie is worth one-half. The top four teams make the playoffs, seeded 1 v 4 and 2 v 3, and each playoff round and the final is five doubles matches, first to three.
For a bettor this splits into two units. A match bet settles on one match. A gameday bet settles on the whole card of five or six matches. Because a match ends at two sets, it can only finish 2-0 or 2-1, so a correct-score bet on a match has four outcomes: 2-0 or 2-1 for either side.
How to bet on jai alai
The league names four markets for every Season X Friday night. What settles each one:
- Moneyline: the winner of the match or gameday the book lists.
- Spreads: the winning margin, against the line the book quotes.
- Totals: the combined count the book quotes, over or under its number.
- Player props: a single player’s result in the terms the book sets.
Read each book’s settlement rules before you bet, because the unit (points, sets or matches) is set by the book. The jai alai odds themselves are posted by DraftKings, FanDuel, Hard Rock Bet and BetRivers.
The league says these markets are available in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, Ontario and Mexico. Check with your local sportsbook for what it lists.
Numbers worth knowing
Jai alai is Basque for merry festival. The game dates to at least the 1600s in the Basque country, reached the Americas through Cuba in 1901, and came to the US at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.
The world-record crowd was 15,502 at Miami Jai Alai on December 27, 1975. JAM Arena now seats 1,500. The record ball speed, by the league’s figure, is 190 mph (305.77 km/h), thrown by Ibon Aldazabal on November 24, 2017.
The champions split $30,000 and the runners-up split $15,000.
