They’re billing it as the biggest women’s title fight ever. And it just might be. It is certainly getting enough hype. And there couldn’t be a more exciting venue than Madison Square Garden for the bout between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano for the undisputed lightweight championship.
It will be televised through the DAZN streaming service on Saturday night, with Taylor putting her WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF belts on the line.
For those who like to study boxing, this is, at the risk of using a cliche, a classic matchup of styles, with Serrano aiming to be the effective puncher-type, with Taylor utilizing speed and boxing ability to score points while avoiding danger.

About Katie Taylor
Taylor is one of the great amateurs in history. She captured six European championships, five World championships, and a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, the first time the women were allowed to compete. However, she lost her quarterfinal match against Poland’s Mira Potkonan in the 2016 Games.
Taylor has remained undefeated through 20 pro fights, but has only six wins inside the distance. She actually holds a decision victory over Cindy Serrano, Amanda’s sister (October 2018), which turned out to be Cindy’s last pro fight. Not all of Taylor’s wins have been cakewalks; she won a very controversial majority decision over Delfine Persoon in June 2019, and it was clear that she was bothered by the constant pressure. But fourteen months later, Taylor won the rematch with a decision that didn’t leave much room for doubt.
About Amanda Serrano
Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) has had a remarkable career, winning titles in seven different weight divisions, from super flyweight (115 lbs.) up to super lightweight (the 140-pound limit). And the thing is, she hasn’t progressed up the weight ladder, but rather, has been kind of all over the place.
For example, she went from 138.5 pounds in September 2018 to 114.5 pounds just four months later, in pursuit of more “hardware.” Last time out, in December, she won a ten-round non-title decision over Miriam Gutierrez.
Both of these competitors have found success in other sports as well. Taylor is an accomplished soccer player, appearing for the Irish national team in World Cup qualifiers in 2007 and 2011. Serrano competes in MMA and submission grappling as well as boxing.
To put the real analysis on this, let’s take a look at the proposition in front of us:
Taylor vs. Serrano Predictions
Serrano by Decision or Technical Decision +155
Taylor by Decision or Technical Decision +155
Serrano by KO, TKO or DQ +325
Taylor by KO, TKO or DQ +900
Draw or Technical Draw +1000
The strategy for these fighters would seem predictable; Serrano would like to exert pressure and test Taylor’s chin in a big way. She is definitely the puncher in this matchup, and along the way that also means body punches. Serrano is also a southpaw, which is well worth noting.
Taylor will unquestionably seek to “out-slick” Serrano. She is the more technically proficient of the two, but she is no power merchant, so her big assignment is coming up with some way to keep Serrano at bay. Part of that is making sure she’s not a stationary target, as success in that area may serve to create some confusion.
I have a feeling Taylor’s job is more daunting. And I say that, even taking into account that this fight is scheduled for ten (10) two-minute rounds, which you figure would give Taylor a chance to steal a lot of rounds.
First of all, if you don’t have a lot of firepower, and a way to make your opponent truly pay for coming forward, you are really going to have your work cut out for you.
I acknowledge that Serrano’s knockouts have generally come in the smaller weight divisions. But that’s okay. Someone with Taylor’s style would much prefer to dictate the pace and pick away at a stand-up opponent. So she’s going to be taken out of her comfort zone. And I seriously entertain the possibility that in the process of being the one who is applying the pressure, Serrano has a real opportunity to be the busier fighter. That translates into scoring points, especially in front of the hometown crowd (Serrano is originally from Puerto Rico, but now resides in Brooklyn).
Taylor spent so much time – over a decade, in fact – as a world-class amateur. And I wonder if she may be getting to the point where she’s burning out. I think she can get out-worked here. With that in mind, this is the way I’m going, as I would expect a distance fight:
Over 8.5 Rounds -375
Serrano by Decision or Technical Decision +155
