As the second half kicks off with a full slate of games, let’s take a look at some of the best over/under betting opportunities Friday night.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox
Guardians vs. White Sox Prediction
Best Bet: Under 8.5 (-114)
The Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox are battling it out for a second place in the AL Central. Only one game separates the two, with both teams within three games of the Minnesota Twins.
Cal Quantrill and Lucas Giolito will battle it out Friday night. While both have been inconsistent at times, they both are capable of shutting down opposing offenses.
The White Sox rank 15th in scoring (4.41 runs per game) while the Guardians rank 16th (4.34). With neither team dominating on offense, runs could be at a premium.
Throw in the fact that the under has hit in four of the last five meetings between the two teams, and taking the under 8.5 seems like a smart bet in this one.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds
Best Bet: Over 10 (-106)
In an NL Central showdown, the Cardinals and Reds will square off in a three-game series this weekend. Currently, the Cardinals sit just a half-game out of first in the division, while the Reds are dead last, 15 games out of first.
St. Louis ranks 10th in the majors in scoring, averaging 4.59 runs per game. While the Reds rank 18th (4.29 runs), they have been considerably better at home. In fact, Cincinnati is averaging 5.04 runs per game at the Great American Ball Park.
Adam Wainwright is certainly capable of shutting down an opposing offense, but the Reds have enough firepower to do their part in hitting the over ten runs.
San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets
Best Bet: Over 6.5 (-114)
For those that like pitching, this matchup should be a good one. The Padres will send Yu Darvish (8-4, 3.41 ERA) against the Mets’ Max Scherzer (6-1, 2.22 ERA).
While the pitching matchup lends itself to a low runline, 6.5 is low enough to entice the over bet.
The Mets rank fifth in scoring (4.70) and have several players that have had success against Yu Darvish in their careers. In fact, Pete Alonso, Eduardo Escobar, Starling Marte, and Jeff McNeil have all homered off of the righty.
The Padres fall to 17th in scoring (4.34 runs), but they have been much better on the road averaging 5.10 runs away from Petco.
If both of these pitchers are electric, it could be tough to get the over, but the offenses are solid enough that getting to seven runs seems very achievable. Take the over 6.5 runs.
Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics
Rangers vs. Athletics Prediction
Best Bet: Over 7 (-118)
While both of these AL West teams have struggled this year, the trends support the over pick in this one.
For Texas, their total has gone over in eight of their last 11 games and 13 of the last 18 against AL teams.
While Oakland struggles to score (29th, averaging 3.29 runs), the Rangers rank 11th in the majors averaging 4.51 runs. In fact, in their matchup with the Marlins Thursday, they put up eight runs, including five against a solid Pablo Lopez.
