There has been so much mythologizing about Michael Jordan over the years, not just his exploits on the court but how competitive he is at everything – tennis, pool shooting, business, whatever. Have enough people asked the question as to why he can’t seem to put together a team in Charlotte that has achieved any kind of relevance?
This year we’ll see an upgrade in this club that should at least put it in the running for a lower-rung playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
LaMelo Ball should at least stir things up a bit, and otherwise the Hornets have a backcourt that can do some of the things Cleveland’s guards can do, except they have more experience. And if they give Gordon Hayward (17.5 ppg) room to maneuver, he’ll make a major impact. I like PJ Washington too. He’s got upside.
The Cavs have some promising youngsters, like Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, but they are hard-pressed to play as a unit. Andre Drummond is obviously one of the league’s premier rebounders, but Kevin Love won’t be available here. If you’re going to go big, you need him. Cleveland has been dead last in the NBA in Defensive Rating the past two seasons, and no team allowed opponents to shoot for a higher percentage then they did in the 2020-21 season.

New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers Predictions
When: 7:05 PM ET
NBA Betting Lines: Pacers -8.5
Indiana’s new coach, former Toronto assistant Nate Bjorkgren, is considering a 12-man rotation, not just out of necessity because it is the early part of the season, but because it is an essential part of his overall vision. These guys will play faster this year, and in this one they have the best guard (Victor Oladipo), best big man (Domantas Sabonis) and most versatile player (Malcolm Brogdon) on the floor. Actually, his goal is to make everybody versatile, and they will shoot more threes.
People may not believe this, but Tom Thibodeau, an old-school type, actually embraces analytics. Quite a bit, in fact. But this has been a short training camp, and he has inherited a team that is a mess. He is trying to inject something of a defensive culture, and that is going to take some time. Right now the Knicks don’t have enough personnel.

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies Predictions

In recent years, the dilemma for the San Antonio Spurs has been that they don’t shoot a lot of threes, which has bucked an NBA analytical trend, but they have been very accurate from beyond the arc (4th in the league last season). Well, perhaps that is because the opponent isn’t often expecting it.
Gregg Popovich intends to play with a smaller lineup this season, run more, and shoot more threes. That’s great, except that his two best offensive players (DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge) are absolutely not known to be any good at it, and he will be playing without a couple of guards (Derrick White, Quandary Weatherspoon) who would be giving him some of that outside shooting.
Yes, this is old guard vs. new guard. Memphis is a team on the rise, and Taylor Jenkins is a sharp guy who got his start from Popovich. So it’s teacher vs. pupil in a sense. Memphis opens the season without Justise Winslow and Jaren Jackson. But there are a few others who can guard multiple positions, and Jonas Valanciunas in the middle is better than any pivot man San Antonio has. Great matchup between Memphis point guard Ja Morant and San Antonio’s All-Defensive guard Dejounte Murray. But who can keep up with Morant?

Sacramento Kings at Denver Nuggets Predictions
When: 9:05 PM ET
NBA Betting Lines: Nuggets -8.5
Sacramento has a number of talented players, but with them it’s the same old story – they can’t find a way to play together effectively. We’re not sure Luke Walton is the guy to get that done, although most people agree that removing GM Vlade Divac from the equation was a positive.
The Nuggets lost some defenders, and that may get them in the end, but Denver has a chance to take a real step up offensively. Michael Porter Jr. has emerged as a force on that end, and Bol Bol may get a chance to do the same. When Facundo Campazzo and Nikola Jokic are on the floor together, you may see some of the best ball movement in history. In the fourth quarter, these guys can make a blowout even worse, if it comes to that, with their second unit.
The Play: DENVER
