PGA: 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Predictions

Sergio Garcia won last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship and that victory pushed him up the odds-list this week heading into the Shriners Open. Garcia comes in at +3300, which is inside the top-fifteen favorites the week.

The problem for Garcia, odds-wise, is that several other big-names are making their return to regular play following the TOUR Championship and U.S. Open several weeks ago. One of those players is Bryson DeChambeau who enters as the favorite at +700. DeChambeau was the winner of the U.S. Open.

Another player returning to a more regular schedule is Patrick Cantlay who won this event in 2017. He’s finished second the last two years – one of which was a playoff loss to Kevin Na last season. Cantlay comes in at +1200.

The field is stronger this week but it is still not as deep as a higher-profile event. Outside of some of the obvious names (see top-five below), there’s still plenty of value picks available. An example is Rickie Fowler who is also at +3300 with Garcia.

Here are the favorites to win the 2020 Shriners Open outright according to Intertops.

TPC at Summerlin is one of the most scenic courses on the PGA Tour according to many. The desert set of links is located just outside of Las Vegas and is strikingly green when compared to other dry climate courses.

The course plays Par 71 at 7,255 yards with rolling green fairways dotted with bunkers and plenty of trees in some areas. Target golf will come into play as the fairways are not as wide as the look. TPC Summerlin is often referred to as a second-shot course.

While being green, there are still plenty of well-manicured natural patches with rocks and native grasses. Well-placed tee shots will be key to this stroke-play tournament.

2020 Shriners Open Picks

Bryson DeChambeau +700

I have to go with the obvious this week. Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open a few weeks ago and I don’t usually take players the next tournament they play in after an emotional win. However, DeChambeau has waited for several tournaments so they raw emotions of winning a major are behind him. He won this event in 2018 and last year he finished 5th.

Patrick Cantlay +1200

I touched on Cantlay above teasing my lean towards him. He won the Shiners in 2017 and has almost won it the last two seasons. Cantlay has nailed this course the last few years and there’s no reason to think he won’t be strong again.

Jason Day +2800

Jason Day finished out the 2020 season with a run of four T7 or better finishes out of his last six tournaments. His only event this season (officially 2021) was the U.S. Open where he finished a disappointing T38. However, his style of play of late may be well suited for TPC Summerlin this week.

Others I Like

Kevin Na – Tony Finau: I’m looking at Kevin Na and thinking value pick – he’s been so strong at the Shriners that it’s hard to not take a look when he’s at +6600. Tony Finau comes in at +1600. He finished 8th at the U.S. Open and finished the 2020 portion of the 2020/2021 schedule with five of seven tournament finishes of 17th or better including an 8th , T3, T4, and 5th place run respectively.
