The John Deere Classic was one of the 2020 tournaments shuttered last year by COVID-19. Thankfully the event has made a return to the schedule! And, this is setting up to be a week where a possible value pick pulls off the win on Sunday similar to last week with Cameron Davis.

Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week in an extended playoff – it was his first PGA Tour victory. Davis, and others, pushed the players at the top of the favorites list to the side and it could happen again this week as the John Deere Classic field is lacking some of the Tour’s heavy hitters as players gear up for the upcoming British Open.

That opens the door for Daniel Berger to be the lone favorite at +900 with Brian Harman and Sunjae Im right behind him at +1400. Harman won this event in 2014 when he went 22 under for a one-stroke win over Zach Johnson who falls down the list of favorites into a value position of +4000.

Format: Stroke Play

Par: 71

When: July 8-11, 2021

There are going to be some monster drives off the tee at TPC Deere Run, you can expect some loud smacks coming from the CBS and Golf Channel microphones. The course lends itself to long drives that settle in open landing zones. The idea is to get past the terrain areas of natural rough. Second shots are where things start to get tight.

The course is not overly tough (for Tour Professionals) but does have some well-protected greens and fairways that drain into deep areas of the rolling terrain. Missing the fairway means trouble in deep rough areas, a well-groomed mini valley, or bunkers.

Many of the greens are elevated with a few false fronts and plenty of side bunkers. The flip side is that once on the green putters should become hot. Water only comes into play a few times and when it does it swallows golf balls. The course finishes with water along the left side of the green on No. 18.

Sungjae Im +1400

Sungjae Im carded a T26 here in 2019 after a slight tumble down the board on the weekend. But his game, especially for TPC Deere Run, has been more on point since then. Im came close to winning a green jacket at the Masters where he finished T2 and he T5 at the Tournament of Champions. He’s now sitting at No. 28 on the World Golf Rankings list.

Zach Johnson +4000

Zach Johnson has played this course many times and picked up a John Deere win in 2012. Since then he’s shown plenty of inconsistency on Tour but always seems to play well here. He’s finished in the top ten seven times including three in second place. He came back from missing the cut at the U.S. Open to finish in the top 25 at the Travelers.

Beau Hossler +6600

Beau Hossler has only shown his power and accuracy a few times this year as he’s battled with the cut many times this season. He’s failed to move onto the weekend nine times in 2021. That being said, things have started to click – his last three events include a T19, T10, and T25 respectively. His game is well suited for TPC Deere Run.

Others: Steve Stricker (+5000) has a Legends win this year and has won this event three times in the past with the latest being in 2011. Daniel Berger (+900) is the favorite coming in as expected and warranted, but due to the nature of the field, I’m looking for more value down the favorites list.
