PGA: 2021 Palmetto Championship Odds and Picks

If you’re wondering why the Palmetto Championship does not sound familiar, don’t stress out – you’re not the first. Once again, due to COVID 19 rules North of the border, the Canadian Open has been canceled. Enter the Palmetto Championship in South Carolina!

This event will most likely be a one-and-done event on a course that is less than five years old. Only a handful of PGA Tour players have carded rounds on the course. That means oddsmakers are going by how the field stacks up throughout the year. That puts two players in a somewhat weak field at the top of the favorites list.

Both Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka enter the week at +800 and they are the only two players coming in under +1000. One reason for the lack of big names this week is that next week is the U.S. Open and many players are taking the week off.

In addition, some Tour regulars that are not already in the Open are playing qualifying rounds earlier in the week to make the open. Those qualifiers are also packed with amateurs and Korn Ferry players.

Yes, there are plenty of familiar names in the Palmetto field but there is also plenty of value picks waiting in the wings. The great news is the Congaree Golf Club is an amazing course featuring long par-fours and fives, target golf, and no rough. Yep – no rough, if you miss the fairway you’re playing off the sand. More on the stunningly beautiful course below.

Here are the favorites through +2000 to win the 2021 Palmetto Championship outright according to Intertops.

Expert Golf Betting Guide

Congaree Golf Club is a brand new Tom Fazio-designed course that opened in 2018. There is not much data to draw from statistically other than the basics listed above. That being said, there are a few pieces of information that stand out.

First, the course plays long at 7,685 yards at only a par 71 venue. That means players will have to take advantage of birdies on the par-fives. Secondly, the course has one level of grass which is a fairway cut. The rough, if any, is limited as almost all of the areas that would normally be rough-cut grass are sand.

Some of the terms being floated around media circles are “shot-shapers” and “targeted” to name a few. That should give you an idea of what style of play we should be looking for. Descriptions of the course include comparisons to courses in Australia or those seen more on the European Tour.

Water comes into play on several holes with marshy areas and ponds.

2021 Palmetto Championship Predictions

Brooks Koepka +800

Brooks Koepka seems to be coming back to form. This season he’s been a bit up and down but he does have a win at Phoenix and a pair of T2s. One of those T2 finishes was the PGA Championship. When he’s hot he can carve up a golf course and this is the place to do it. He’s ranked 2nd on the Tour in “Sand Saved Percentage” which should come in handy at Congaree Golf Club. I’m surprised he’s playing this event before the Open where he has a great chance to win a PGA major in 2021.

Ian Poulter +3300

Ian Poulter can carve up a tight course and with no overseeding, his drives will have extra carry once they hit the fairway. That goes for other players that stay in the fairway as well. Poulter is coming off a T3 at the Charles Schwab which has been his best outing of the year going 68, 70, 64, and 68 for the week finishing ten under at 270.

Lucas Glover +4000

Lucas Glover is a great example of a value pick. He’s from South Carolina and he’s a Professional Ambassador for Congaree which means he is familiar with the course. Glover has not won this season but he’s been solid for much of the year. He was sole 4th at the Valero and T5 at Mayakoba.

Others I Like: Harris English comes in at +2800. English has one win this season and a pocket full of top-25 runs. Alex Noren is worth taking a look at +3300. Noren has made it to the weekend 15 of 19 times this season with nine inside the top-25. My only concern is that he has yet to card a 2021 top-ten finish.
