Last season Bryson DeChambeau came back from the COVID break sporting a new look – he bulked up! Before capturing the 2020 U.S. Open he put on a power-hitting clinic at the Detroit Golf Club and the second Rocket Mortgage Classic. DeChambeau, at +750, is the favorite this week as oddsmakers think he can repeat last year’s win over Matthew Wolff.

DeChambeau went 23 under and 263 for the 2020 event beating Wolff by three strokes. Wolff is getting some respect this year as he’s listed in the top ten at +3000. You can tell by the jump from DeChambeau at +750 to Wolff at +3000 in only eight players that value picks start popping up early this week!

The course is 17 holes of the North Course at the facility and one additional hole from the South Course at the Club. Other than that bit of trivia, the Detroit Golf Club is a standard classic course that relies on great tee shots and solid putting. The fairways are mostly straight and protected by bunkers lining the edges.

Well-placed bunkers protect many of the landing zones. The par-three holes are some of the tougher holes on the course with one having a blind green approach. The greens are small overall with some featuring sloping false fronts with several being elevated.

Like other Don Ross links, great tee shots are rewarded! If a player misses the fairway then you can expect some additional work to be done.

Bryson DeChambeau +750

Bryson DeChambeau is the lone favorite for a reason and that’s last year’s win at this tournament combined with solid play this season… minus the one quad-bogey two weeks ago. Last year he led the field in strokes gained in regulation and led the field in par-4 scoring. His distance and ability to correct around the green are a plus. He has to avoid problems with long approaches and his putter.

Will Zalatoris +2200

Will Zalatoris can take advantage of smaller greens at the Detroit Golf Club as he’s not solid on overside greens with multiple undulations. Zalatoris can get close to the booming drives DeChambeau will be thrilling the crowd with and he’s improved to T9 in par-five scoring. That’s a plus for this type of course.

Bubba Watson +4000

Similar to last week, where Watson was +5000, he once again becomes an option as a value pick at +4000 this week. Yes, he finished T19 at the Travelers after sliding from the lead – but up to that point, he was playing like the Watson of old. He can pull off the win with four solid days – especially if players like Dechambeau stumble.

Others: Jason Kokrak (+2500) has two wins this season and has moved into the 10th ranking spot for the Ryder Cup team. Doc Redman (+5000) has been playing solid golf this season and carded a T2 at Congaree a few weeks ago.
