The masterful win by Jon Rahm at the U.S. Open last week is in the books. Rahm sunk two huge putts setting up the victory at a course he enjoys. This week Rahm, now the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, is skipping the Travelers Championship which still sports a strong field following a major.

That field includes a couple of the players that were in the running last week at the open including Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson. Both come in at +1200 as co-favorites following their outings at the Open.

DeChambeau was part of the mix for the win in the closing hour of the Open before suffering a quadruple-bogey thus falling back to T29 while Johnson finished T19. That caused a shuffle in the Official World Golf Rankings dropping Johnson from the top spot to 2nd with DeChambeau falling from 5th to 6th.

Types of Golf Bets Explained

Players are teeing off on a course that has not changed much since last year. That’s a welcome bit of news following the USGA’s annual tweaking of the course used for the U.S. Open. TPC River Highlands features greens averaging 5000 sq feet covered in Poa Annua grass draining off to a 3-4” rough.

The course has been tweaked since it was redesigned by Pat Dye but it still has his touch. Fairways feature several trees, predictable bunkers, water, and a host of slight doglegs. At the same time, there are plenty of seemingly straightforward holes that only require a straight shot off the tee.

The course is not overly tricky and the rough will be much more forgiving than that of the U.S. Open last week. Players with clean drivers and a reliable putter will top the leaderboard early.

2021 Travelers Championship Predictions

Dustin Johnson +1200

Dustin Johnson was one of the players I leaned on last week in the odds as well as fantasy. One worked out and one did not. I’m still with Johnson this week instead of fading because of the course. Johnson should be able to move around TPC River Highlands this week without too much of a problem.

Paul Casey +1600

Paul Casey has finished second behind Bubba Watson twice at this event – one of which was a playoff back in 2015. Like Watson, Casey knows this course and has been strong heading into play this week. Casey has finished in the top ten in his last three starts.

Bubba Watson +5000

Bubba Watson has won this tournament three times with the most recent being in 2018. The only player to top that number is Billy Casper with four back in the 1960s and 1970s. Watson has carved up this course in the past and his game from the U.S. Open should translate perfectly to the Travelers. At +5000, Watson becomes a better value!

Others: I can’t get away from Harris English (+3300) again this week. He pulled off a solid sole 3 rd place finish last week at the U.S. Open. He’s been painfully close to getting his second win this season. After Bryson DeChambeau (+1200) went through a hard slide last week I’m going to keep him in my back pocket this week for possible betting on Saturday and Sunday following the cut.
